1. Ferragudo

Why we love it
Ferragudo is a real favorite for us. This fishing village has managed to retain its authenticity despite the Algarve’s tourist boom. Located at the mouth of the River Arade, opposite Portimão, it offers a traditional setting with its white houses rising up the hill to the church.
We were particularly taken by the relaxed atmosphere in the main square, lined with traditional cafés and restaurants.
The fishing port, still in operation, adds a touch of authenticity that is sometimes lacking in other, more touristy towns in the region.

2. Tavira

Why we love it
Tavira, nicknamed “the pearl of the Algarve”, charmed us with its unspoilt authenticity. With the Gilão River running through it, this historic town retains a peaceful atmosphere that contrasts with the region’s livelier seaside resorts. We appreciated the mix of architectural influences, testimony to a rich past. The city’s characteristic scissor-tile roofs offer a unique panorama from the highest points.
The old town, with its cobbled streets and shady squares, is an inviting place to stroll.

Attractions
- The Roman Bridge (of medieval origin despite its name)
- Santa Maria do Castelo church and castle ruins
- Praça da República, a lively main square
- The Ilha de Tavira, accessible by boat from the town center

3. Lagos

Why we love it
Lagos won us over with its ability to combine historical heritage with natural assets. A nerve center for Portuguese maritime discoveries in the 15th century, this town has managed to preserve its soul while developing a high-quality tourism offering.
The historic center, surrounded by 16th-century walls, is home to architecture that tells the story of Portugal’s glorious history. And what makes Lagos truly unique are its spectacular rock formations and crystal-clear beaches.
The city also boasts a cosmopolitan atmosphere and lively nightlife, which contrast nicely with the calm of its historic monuments.

4. Faro

Why we love it
Faro, the capital of the Algarve, is often seen as little more than a point of entry to the region, but we’ve discovered a town that’s well worth a visit. Its historic center (Cidade Velha), surrounded by ramparts, is home to a remarkable architectural heritage that bears witness to the city’s eventful history. The cathedral, a blend of Gothic and Baroque styles, offers a panoramic view of the old town and the Ria Formosa from its bell tower.
We enjoyed the authentic atmosphere of its cobbled streets, far removed from the tourist hustle and bustle of other Algarve towns.
The Ria Formosa Natural Park, with its labyrinth of lagoons, islands and salt marshes, is also a major asset for this city, which perfectly combines cultural heritage and natural riches.

Attractions
- The Cidade Velha (Old Town) and its ramparts
- The cathedral (Sé) and its panorama
- The eerie Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones)
- The Municipal Museum with Roman remains

5. Silves

Why we love it
Former capital of the Algarve during the Moorish period, Silves fascinated us with its rich history and unique setting. Situated inland, on the banks of the River Arade, this town is distinguished by its imposing castle, a symbol of the Arab presence in the region. Built of local red sandstone, this fortress dominates the town, providing a striking contrast to the white houses.
Surrounded by orange and citrus groves, the town’s unspoilt natural environment contributes to its charm. Less crowded than the seaside resorts, it offers an authentic immersion in the region’s history and culture.

Attractions
- The Moorish castle (Castelo de Silves), one of the best preserved in Portugal
- Gothic cathedral (Sé)
- The Municipal Archaeology Museum
- La Cruz de Portugal, a 16th-century Manueline cross
- City walls and gates

6. Loulé

Why we love it
Loulé is an authentic Portuguese town, far from the touristy resorts. An important commercial and administrative center for the region, it has preserved its traditional character while developing a dynamic cultural life. Its covered market, built in neo-Moorish style in the early 20th century, is the beating heart of the town and impressed us with its distinctive architecture.

Attractions

7. Monchique

Why we love it
Monchique offers a completely different face of the Algarve, far from the beaches and resorts. Located in the heart of the Serra de Monchique, this mountain village seduced us with its verdant landscapes, cool climate and serene atmosphere.
We enjoyed the walks through the eucalyptus, cork oak and chestnut forests that surround the village. Monchique is also renowned for its healing thermal waters at Caldas de Monchique. The villa ge is also known for its gastronomy, notably the artisanally-produced “medronho” (arbouse brandy) and free-range black pork.

Attractions
- The Fóia summit and its panorama
- The spa town of Caldas de Monchique
- The 15th-century church-matrix
- Nossa Senhora do Desterro convent (in ruins)

8. Alvor

Why we love it
Alvor perfectly combines the charm of an authentic fishing village with the infrastructure of a modern seaside resort. This contrast particularly appealed to us during our visit. The historic center, with its narrow cobbled streets, typical houses and small squares, has retained its traditional character despite the development of tourism.
And we loved the beauty of its long sandy beach and the estuary of the Alvor River, an ecologically important wetland that attracts many species of birds. The wooden footbridges that cross the dunes and wetlands allow you to explore this fragile ecosystem while enjoying the views.

Attractions
- The magnificent Alvor beach with its 3.5km of sandy beach
- The historic center and its picturesque alleyways
- The sixteenth-century church-matrix
- The ruins of the Moorish castle
- The Ria de Alvor nature reserve and its footbridges
- The traditional fishing port

9. Odeceixe

Why we love it
Located on the border between the Algarve and Alentejo, Odeceixe offered us a unique experience combining influences from both regions. The village has a traditional architecture with whitewashed houses. The old windmill overlooking the village offers spectacular views of the surrounding area.
But the area is best known for its beach (Praia de Odeceixe), located around 3km from the village. Here, the Seixe River flows into the Atlantic Ocean, forming a unique landscape of towering cliffs, dunes and a small freshwater lagoon ideal for families. This rare configuration offers the possibility of bathing in either the ocean or the river, depending on preferences and conditions.

Attractions
- Odeceixe beach, one of the most beautiful in Portugal
- The historic center and its typical alleyways
- The traditional windmill
- The parish church
- The Rota Vicentina, a famous hiking trail
- Terraced agricultural fields

10. Portimão

Why we love it
Portimão is a destination of choice, known for the breathtaking beaches and golden cliffs for which the Algarve is famous. Beyond the beaches, the seaside resort boasts a lively town center and a pleasant waterfront. Between boat tours to discover sea caves, kayak excursions along rocky coasts and swimming in turquoise waters, you’ll have no time to get bored!
It’s not the one with the most beautiful downtown, but it has a lot to offer.

Other Algarve towns to consider
Albufeira

The Algarve’s most popular seaside resort, Albufeira attracts visitors from all over the world. The city is divided between its historic center with its cobbled streets and whitewashed houses, and its modern “Strip” with its bars, restaurants and nightlife.
Its many sandy beaches are among the finest in the region. Despite its pronounced tourist character, Albufeira remains a popular destination for its comprehensive infrastructure and central location, making it easy to explore the entire Algarve.

Carvoeiro

A former fishing village transformed into a seaside resort.
The surrounding cliffs, pierced by sea caves and natural arches, offer some of the Algarve’s most spectacular coastal scenery. Carvoeiro attracts families and couples looking for a more intimate atmosphere than in larger resorts like Albufeira.
Villa Real de Santo Antonio

Unlike the Moorish towns of the Algarve, it offers a magnificent Pombalin-style town center (similar to Lisbon) with geometric streets and an elegant central square.
On the border with Spain, it’s an ideal destination for shopping for traditional textiles (household linen) and enjoying huge beaches that are quieter than in the rest of the region.
