We loved strolling through the pedestrianized old town, taking excursions along the cliffs and discovering the many activities on offer. Whether you’re travelling alone, as a couple or with your family, for a weekend or longer, Lagos is sure to seduce you!
1. Explore the iconic Ponta da Piedade

Why visit?
In our opinion, Ponta da Piedade is the Algarve’s most remarkable natural site. These steep ochre cliffs plunge into the ocean, creating breathtaking arches and sea caves. It’s a site we highly recommend, at sunrise or sunset for even more magical colors!

2. Stroll through the old town and marina

Why visit?
We really enjoyed walking around the historic center of Lagos. Narrow cobbled streets, white facades embellished with azulejos or colored earthenware, and lively little squares create a typical, friendly atmosphere. On the way down to the marina, we changed worlds with pleasure boats, modern cafés and the pretty promenade along the Ribeira de Bensafrim. It’s the perfect place to feel the local atmosphere and take a break between 2 visits.

Practical advice
- Duration: 1 to 2 hours, depending on your preferences
- Difficulties: generally flat old town, but narrow cobbled streets
- Numerous catering options
- Covered market and regular events
- Ideal for a stroll at the end of the day
3. Explore the spectacular Praia do Camilo

Why visit?
During our trip, we were impressed by the Praia do Camilo. In fact, it’s our favorite beach in Lagos! The long wooden staircase winding between the cliffs offers superb views all the way down. Down below, a small, peaceful beach lined with golden rocks awaits you for a refreshing swim. We loved exploring the coves and observing the play of light on the orange walls. A site we recommend visiting early in the morning for greater peace and quiet. In our opinion, this beach is one of the must-visit places in the Algarve!

Practical advice
- Best experience: at low tide, as the stretch of sand is reduced at high tide.
- Duration: 1 to 2 hours or more, depending on your preferences
- Difficulties: long wooden staircase with 225 steps, tiring to climb and risk of falling rocks.
- Access: 2.5km from Lagos center, limited free parking at top of staircase
- Head for Ponta da Piedade and Praia do Camilo by boat – see activity details here!

Kayaking along the cliffs of Lagos was an incredible adventure. We paddled in small groups at the foot of golden rocks, slipped into caves and crossed natural arches. The experience offers a totally different view of the rock formations, far more immersive than from the trails. A must if you want to combine sport and nature. We’ve written a full review of the best kayaking experiences in Ponta da Piedade!

6. Visit Sainte-Marie Church and the Slavery Museum

Why visit?
In the heart of the historic center, the Church of Sainte-Marie intrigued us with its sleek white façade and relatively sober interior. The sculpted ceiling is particularly eye-catching, adding a touch of elegance to the whole. We took time to observe the details of the altar and the statues, while enjoying the coolness of the place. Across the street, the small Musée de l’Esclavage (Slavery Museum ) impressed us with the strength of its message and its role in raising awareness. Two complementary tours to better understand the history of Lagos.

Why visit?
Visit Municipal Museum Dr. José Formosinho is a pleasant surprise for anyone interested in the Algarve’s local history, traditions and crafts. Nestled in the city’s historic center, it incorporates the Church of St. Anthony, which impressed us with the richness of its nave, a true gem of Portuguese Baroque. The museum complex also houses a cabinet of curiosities, a rarity in the region and a precious reminder of the encyclopedic spirit that animated the early days of museography.

9. Pass under the São Gonçalo Arch at Lagos Castle

Why visit?
We were surprised to discover that Lagos still boasts some fine remains of fortifications. The castle, or rather what’s left of it, can only be seen from the outside, but allows you to imagine the town in medieval times. It’s also a good starting point for a stroll through the center, notably across the Arc de São Gonçalo. This arched passageway, which leads to the old town, hides a small chapel. See our article on the remains of Château de Lagos for more information!

Practical advice
- Duration: 30min to 1h walk through the old town
- Difficulties: narrow cobbled streets
- Access: downtown, opposite port entrance
10. Contemplating the view from Ponta da Bandeira Fort

We were particularly taken by its advanced military architecture for the time, with its quadrangular plan and low, thick walls facing out to sea. It also conceals a small chapel decorated with 17th-century azulejos. You can also contemplate it from the sea ona boat trip to Ponta da Piedade.

Whether you’re an occasional player or a passionate enthusiast, you’ll appreciate the tranquility of the area and the quality of the facilities. We particularly liked the course at the Palmares Ocean Living & Golf resort, nestled between hills and ocean. A great way to combine sport and contemplation. Our refined cuisine showcases seafood products, sublimated by creative and perfectly mastered combinations. All this, facing an exceptional panorama of the ocean and rolling fairways. We enjoyed every dish in an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere, with attentive service. A culinary interlude that clearly left its mark on our stay, but Lagos is full of other excellent restaurants where you can sample local specialties at a lower price!

Practical advice

- Book your table in advance in high season
14. Enjoy the nightlife

Lagos is also renowned for its relaxed, festive nightlife. We spent some lovely evenings sipping cocktails on the terrace, listening to live music or dining in a convivial atmosphere. An artist played on the Plaça Infante Dom Henrique opposite the Church of Santa Maria during our trip. Restaurants abound, from discreet troquets to lively rooftops. If you like unpretentious but lively evenings, Lagos is an ideal destination.

Other magnificent golden beaches in Lagos
Praia Dona Ana
Like us, you’ll love Praia Dona Ana. This is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve! With its large area of golden sand, impressive cliffs and foaming waves, the beach has it all. This is one of the must-see places near Lagos. We were seduced by the huge pinnacle that stands in the middle of the beach, with its feet in the water. A photographer’s delight! The name of the beach comes from a nun called Ana who lived in a convent in Lagos. Thanks to a tunnel leading to the beach, she was the only survivor of an attack during the First World War!

Praia do Porto de Mós
One of the longest beaches in Lagos, Praia do Porto de Mós seduced us with its magnificent stretch of blond sand and spectacular views of cliffs and blue-green ocean. From the parking lot, a path winds up to the top of the cliffs, offering a unique view of the beach. There’s no shortage of water-based activities: pedalos with water slides for families, surfing sessions for the more sporty, and paddleboat rides to enjoy the peaceful scenery. – book your surf lesson here!

Meia Praia
The largest beach in Lagos, Meia Praia overlooks the city center from the opposite shore. It lacks the charm of the Algarve’s golden cliff beaches, but makes up for it with its lively atmosphere. It boasts a host of amenities, including beach bars, comfortable deckchairs and parasols for lounging, as well as pedalos with integrated slides. A popular attraction for young and old alike on hot summer days!

Family activities in Lagos
Lagos Zoo
Located around 12km from Lagos, the zoo is a great day out if you’re traveling with the family. The area is well planted with trees, making it pleasant even in the hottest weather, with plenty of shade and picnic areas. What’s surprising is the layout: few cages, real proximity to the animals, sometimes within arm’s reach! There’s a great variety of birds, some mammals and a beach shared with turtles and penguins – swimsuits recommended. It’s easy to get to by bus from the city center, and reasonably priced for a great half-day out in nature. – book your ticket here!

Parque Aventura de Lagos
Lagos’ Parque Aventura will appeal to intrepid children and adrenaline-seeking adults alike. With courses suitable for beginners to advanced riders, we particularly appreciated the balance between fun and challenge. There are also several picnic areas where you can enjoy a pleasant break in the shade of the tall pines. In our opinion, this is one of the best family activities in Lagos!

Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos
The Musée des Sciences Vivantes succeeds in making complex subjects such as navigation, exploration and marine science accessible to the public. It’s clearly designed with children in mind: the exhibits are interactive, fun and adapted to the youngest visitors, with lots of games, experiments to handle and even a large outdoor play area. The location is pleasant, even in midsummer, and ideal for an outing with family or friends. This is one of the best cultural activities in Lagos, and a must if you’re staying in the city for several days!

Other attractions around Lagos
Portimão
Portimão is a destination of choice, known for the breathtaking beaches and golden cliffs for which the Algarve is famous. Beyond the beaches, the seaside resort boasts a lively town center and a pleasant waterfront. Between boat tours to discover the Benagil Grotto, kayak excursions along the rocky coastline and swimming in the turquoise waters, you won’t have time to get bored!

Alvor
We enjoyed our getaway to Alvor, a charming fishing village just a 30-minute drive from Lagos. Its small pedestrian center, cobbled streets and waterside restaurants create a peaceful atmosphere. The long walk over the wooden footbridges through the marshes is perfect for a sunset stroll. And the huge Alvor Beach is superb! It’s a beautiful interlude between nature and authenticity.

Alcalar megalithic site
Want to go back in time? A 30-minute drive from Lagos, the Alcalar Megalithic Monuments plunge us into a site where, some 5,000 years ago, a large prehistoric community settled and lived. The visit is short but rewarding, as long as you know how to project yourself, as the remains are not very spectacular visually. A small, slightly dated museum near the ticket office features a reconstruction video and a number of useful explanatory panels to help visitors better understand the site. A cultural break off the beaten track, ideal for lovers of ancient history.

From Faro Airport, you can reach the resort by rental car (approx. 1h drive via the A22), by regional bus (1h45 to 2h journey) or by train from Faro city center. We’ve written a full article on the subject for more information.

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN THE Algarve

- Don’t take a car that’s too wide, as old towns have narrow streets and small parking spaces.

Parking in Lagos
Some streets in the old town are narrow or entirely pedestrianized, so it’s best to avoid venturing out by car. For a quiet place to park, we recommend the Parking Frente Ribeirinha (covered and paying), just 2 steps from the historic center. It’s an excellent starting point for exploring the city on foot. A large free parking lot is also available at Ponta da Piedade, convenient for accessing coastal paths.

Getting around Lagos
Getting around Lagos is easy and pleasant, especially in the city center, which is easy to get around on foot thanks to its pedestrian streets and low traffic levels. It’s best to avoid driving here, as some streets are very narrow. On the other hand, a car is handy for reaching outlying beaches such as Praia do Canavial, or for exploring the surrounding area at your own pace. For a more fun way to get around, a small tourist train serves the city’s main sites – more info here. You can also use the city bus network or take a cab.

Useful tips for visiting Lagos
How long and when is the best time?
We recommend spending at least 2 full days in Lagos to really get the most out of it. One day is enough to see the cliffs from the air, the beaches and the town center, but 2 or 3 days gives you time to go kayaking, visit museums or try a surfing lesson.
The best time to visit? Spring and autumn, when the weather is mild and the crowds are smaller. In summer, the atmosphere is livelier, but some beaches can be crowded.

Visiting directions and difficulties
Lagos is easy to visit on foot, following an itinerary that links the marina, historic streets, ramparts and beaches close to the town center. As far as walks on the Ponta da Piedade side are concerned, the paths are well laid out and punctuated by steps in some places. It’s essential to stay on the marked wooden pontoons, as the rock is crumbly and cliff edges can be dangerous. Some of the beaches below are completely inaccessible on foot: it’s best not to risk a fall trying to reach them from the summit. Caution is still called for if you want to enjoy this exceptional site to the full.

Where to eat in Lagos
In addition to the many small shops where you can sample local specialties, Lagos’ restaurants also feature Portuguese gastronomy. We’ve selected our 3 favorite restaurants from among the city’s wealth of good addresses:
- Restaurant Avenida: refined bistronomic cuisine in elegant surroundings, with a breathtaking view of the marina.
- Restaurant A Petisqueira: nestled in the heart of the old town, it stands out for its delicious fish dishes.
- Restaurant O Mexilhao: traditional Portuguese cuisine enhanced by an excellent wine list
Find our complete selection here!

Visiting Lagos in winter
In our opinion, visiting Lagos in winter is well worth it, especially if you don’t like crowds. This period offers a more authentic and tranquil experience, in pleasant contrast to the hustle and bustle of summer. We particularly appreciate the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent coastal scenery unhindered by a horde of tourists. Read our dedicated article to discover our winter visiting tips!
