1 – Where to rent a car in the Algarve: best agencies

Our preferred platform

Our first instinct is to check out the offers on DiscoverCars.
This platform allows us to easily compare offers from different rental companies: prices and conditions. And every time, we find good deals.

Where to take your car?

If you arrive by plane, pick up your car directly from Faro airport. It’s much easier to handle a vehicle on the open road than in the back streets of a city.

The main car rental hub in the Algarve is:

  • Faro airport (FAO): see offers

But you’ll also find agencies in the major seaside resorts:

  • Lagos – see offers
  • Portimao – view offers
  • Albufeira – see offers

When to rent a car

The Algarve is a very popular destination, especially in summer. We therefore advise you to book as soon as you have your travel dates, to have a choice of cars and better prices!
In July and August, stocks are rapidly depleted. As soon as you have chosen your dates, book the car!

Which are the best rental agencies in the Algarve?

At Faro airport, you’ll find all the major international brands, including..:

  • Sixt
  • Enterprise
  • Budget
  • …

Compare car rental prices

In 2026, Faro airport’s top-rated flights include:

  • Autorent
  • EPI rent a car

So far, we’ve had nothing but positive experiences with no problems. When you read the comments, remember that the millions of people who haven’t had any problems don’t take the time to leave comments…

2 – Which rental car for the Algarve?

Our top 3 tips for choosing your car are:

  • Not too wide, for villages and coastal roads
  • Sufficient power for inland roads
  • Automatic if possible, but in Portugal you’ll find more manual cars.

What size car?

In the villages of the Algarve and the alleyways of historic towns like Lagos and Tavira, the streets can be narrow. Avoid large SUVs or long sedans. The mini, economy and compact categories are ideal for exploring the region, both on the coast and inland.

If you’re planning to take several people with lots of luggage, a mid-range vehicle is a reasonable option. The most important thing is not to choose a car that takes up too much space.

narrow village lane

Which engine?

The Algarve has no demanding mountain roads. The main roads are well maintained and the gradients are moderate. An entry-level engine is more than enough for the coast. On the other hand, if you’re planning to explore the Serra de Monchique or the winding roads of the hinterland, a slightly more powerful engine will be more comfortable.

Automatic or manual?

As in many European countries, most cars available in Portugal are manual.
Rental agencies offer automatic cars, but these are often more expensive and less plentiful. Book early if the automatic gearbox is essential for you.
On Discovercars.com, you can use the “Automatic transmission” filter on the left to refine your search.

3 – Permits, rules and credit cards

Minimum age

The official driving age in Portugal is 18.
However, most of the car rental companies in the Algarve require..:

  • be over 21 years of age
  • have held a driving licence for one year or more
  • additional charges apply if you are under 25 years of age

Do I need an international permit?

To drive in Portugal (for a short stay), you can use your country’s licence if:

  • it has a license number
  • he has a photograph
  • it has a validity date
  • it is written in Latin letters

European, American, Canadian, Australian… licenses are accepted. Otherwise, an international permit is required.

Do I need a credit card?

The answer is “maybe”.
If you rent a car without taking the 0 deductible from the rental company, they will systematically take a deposit with your credit card. Some rental companies refuse to accept debit cards.
If you take out insurance that sets the deductible at zero, you don’t need a credit card.

4 – Taking out insurance

Compulsory insurance

Unlimited liability insurance is compulsory in Portugal. It is automatically included in the price of all car rentals.

Supplements

Roads in the Algarve are generally well maintained. The risk of damage is limited if you drive carefully. That said, we recommend that you at least cover bodywork damage, especially if you plan to use unpaved trails to access some of the wilder beaches.

3 main options:

Option 1
Your personal car or home insurance covers car rentals (but read the fine print, it’s rare).

Option 2
Take out insurance on the rental platform.
Advantage: better price than the rental company’s price
Disadvantage: you’ll have to leave the deposit when you pick up your car, and pay it up front in the event of damage. Since we’ve been using Discovercars, we’ve always taken their insurance. We called on them following two incidents of damage. And in all cases, refunds were made within 7 days.

Option 3
Take the complementary car rental. It’s more expensive, but you won’t have to pay anything up front and you won’t have to do any paperwork in the event of damage.

A LITTLE MORE patience

All the photos, maps, information and addresses you need to make your stay in Portugal a success will soon be available in a single ebook!

5 – Access to rental cars

At Faro airport, rental agencies are easy to find. Major brand counters are located directly in the arrivals hall. Cars are parked in dedicated parking lots just a few minutes away on foot or accessible by shuttle bus.

Some smaller agencies are located outside the airport and offer a free shuttle service. Check this when you book to avoid any surprises on arrival.

6 – Check your vehicle on pick-up

Checking the car

If you’ve taken the rental company’s complementary service to set the excess to zero, there’s no need to check the condition of the car, but make sure you’ve got the essentials.

Otherwise, we recommend (just for peace of mind) that you walk around the car, take photos of any damage and inform the agency if it’s not noted in the car pick-up document.
Pay attention:

  • fuel level and mileage, that they correspond to the file
  • the entire exterior of the car to detect dents and scratches
  • on the roof – It’s often forgotten, but it may be checked on your return.
  • below the bumpers
  • rearview mirrors
  • inside
  • tire condition
  • the condition of the wing (mud wing above the wheels)
  • spare wheel (if applicable, as fewer and fewer cars have a spare wheel)

Mandatory in-car equipment

In Portugal, the following equipment must be available in the car:

  • Warning triangle (mandatory)
  • Reflective vest (mandatory)
  • Spare set of lights (mandatory)
  • First-aid kit (recommended)
  • Fire extinguisher (recommended)

Find out more about toll management

There are toll booths in Portugal, especially on the A22 freeway, which runs east-west along the Algarve. This freeway is entirely electronic: there are no physical barriers, and passage is automatically detected.
You can pay using an electronic badge supplied by some rental companies (often at an extra cost), or by paying after the fact using the terminals available at service stations and supermarkets.
Ask your rental agency about this solution before you hit the road. Failure to pay tolls can result in fines.

Find out about border crossings

You may want to visit Spain during your stay in the Algarve, for example to see Sevilla or Andalucia. In this case, beware: border crossings are not always authorized by rental companies. Be sure to check with your travel agency for details and insurance conditions before crossing the border.

7 – Getting ready to drive in the Algarve

Driving in the Algarve is not particularly difficult, but you do need to be careful on winding coastal roads and in historic town centers.

See our full article on driving in Portugal.

General rules

  • Drive on the right side of the road
  • Respect speed limits:
    • In town: 50km/h, often less in historic centers
    • Outside built-up areas: 90km/h
    • Freeways: 120km/h
  • BAC limit: 0.05%.
  • Seatbelts compulsory for all passengers
  • No phone use while driving
  • Headlights must be on in tunnels

Main hazards

The main hazards on Algarve roads are..:

  • Excessive speed, especially on lightly traveled stretches of freeway
  • Winding and sometimes unprotected coastal roads
  • Unsurfaced tracks to access wild beaches, unsuitable for low-cost vehicles
  • Heavy summer traffic around Portimão, Albufeira and Lagos
  • The narrow streets of old town centers such as Tavira and Silves

What to do in the event of an accident

If people are injured or there is a conflict, the emergency number in Portugal is 112. The best order of action is as follows:

  • contact the emergency services
  • contact the police
  • contact your rental provider

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to hire a car in the Algarve?

We strongly recommend that you rent a car. Public transport covers the main routes, but it won’t get you to the wildest beaches, inland villages or cliff-top viewpoints. With a car, you have the freedom to go where you want, when you want.

car needed to see the most beautiful beaches

Is it worth having a 4×4?

In the vast majority of cases, no. The Algarve’s main and secondary roads are well surfaced. A standard vehicle is more than sufficient to visit the best-known sites. On the other hand, if you want to access some of the Costa Vicentina’s isolated beaches or explore the hinterland, a vehicle with higher ground clearance may be useful. A compact SUV remains a reasonable alternative, without going as far as a full 4×4.

What to do if you are fined

You are responsible for any fines incurred during the rental period.
It can take up to 3 months before a fine is reported to the rental company. In this case, it will send you a proof and charge you for it, adding an administrative fee.

What to do if there’s a problem with the car?

Don’t lose your rental agreement.
On this page, you will find the steps to take if you have a problem with your car.
Most agencies have a breakdown assistance service, and the number will be indicated on the contract.
You can then contact the rental company to see how to replace the car.

Praia da Marinha

What is the budget required?

Prices vary from 20 to 100 EUR per day, depending on the season, type of vehicle and insurance chosen. In summer, rates rise significantly, especially in July and August. Outside the high season, you can find much better deals by booking in advance.
