Luxury hotels in the Algarve: summary
The Algarve boasts a wide range of upscale hotels in its main tourist towns: Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira and Faro. You’ll find large 5-star beach resorts, chic boutique hotels, exclusive golf resorts and elegant adults-only establishments perched on cliffs. We found that each destination has its own identity: Lagos focuses on charming addresses with ocean views or upmarket golf resorts, Portimão is home to historic Relais & Châteaux hotels and Albufeira offers a palette ranging from 5-star cliffside resorts to intimate boutique hotels in the center.
Seasonality plays an important role: from June to September, prices go up and availability goes down rapidly. We recommend booking in advance, especially for the most sought-after establishments. On the other hand, a car is still a good way to get the most out of the region, although some hotels offer shuttle services or are ideally located for exploring on foot.

Why stay there?
Perched on a cliff overlooking Praia da Rocha, the Bela Vista Hotel & Spa is probably the oldest hotel in the Algarve, dating back to 1934. Classified as a Relais & Châteaux, it combines the charm of 20th-century history with the amenities of a contemporary luxury establishment. The richly decorated 38 rooms are spread across three separate buildings: the Palacere (main building dating from 1918), the Casa Azul (1930s) and the Bela Vista Jardim (2011). We were lucky enough to stay in the sea-view Casa Azul, and have particularly fond memories of it. The Michelin-starred gourmet restaurant and 400m² L’Occitane spa confirm the excellence of this address. If you’re looking for an unusual hotel in the Algarve, this is the place to stay.

The 3HB is, in our opinion, one of the best luxury hotels in the Algarve. We liked its elegant design, bright, spacious rooms and central Faro location. The panoramic rooftop terrace boasts an infinity pool with breathtaking views of the city and surrounding area. Breakfast, served with care, is sure to be one of the highlights of your stay. Attentive service and a spa with sauna, Turkish bath and heated indoor pool complete the overall experience. We recommend this establishment to anyone wishing to stay in Faro in an upscale setting.

Why stay there?
This 5-star resort in Ponta da Piedade won us over with its original decor, a tribute to the great Portuguese explorers. Each wing takes the traveler to a different continent, from Asia to Africa. There are two spectacular outdoor pools, one overlooking the ocean, the other lined with fine sand. Restaurant Senses offers creative cuisine with international influences, using local produce from the Algarve, while Restaurant The Gastropub focuses on more classic Portuguese recipes. We also really appreciated the extensive sports and wellness facilities, including a full spa with sauna, Jacuzzi, steam room and ice fountain. You’ll be seduced by the atmosphere of this resort, particularly well-suited to family stays or travelers looking for a variety of activities.

Why stay there?
Part of the same complex as the Aparthotel Palmares Signature, the Palmares Beach House offers rooms exclusively for adults. The décor plays on natural materials and light tones to create a refined, luminous atmosphere. We appreciated the attention paid to the layout of the spaces, which favors spectacular views of Meia Praia and the ocean. The panoramic pool, perched high above the beach, is a particularly pleasant place to relax. You’ll also enjoy the Michelin-starred Restaurant Al Sud and the other facilities of the Palmares complex. This is a solid address for a quiet stay, far from the hustle and bustle of seaside resorts.

Why stay there?
This adults-only 5-star boutique hotel is nestled in a vast estate to the west of Lagos. Its 15 spacious, bright rooms, where noble materials and large bay windows create a subtle dialogue between interior and nature, exude a particularly refined atmosphere. Restaurant Alecrin serves Portuguese cuisine revisited using produce from the establishment’s own kitchen garden. We recommend this hotel for its quiet, intimate atmosphere, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the big seaside resorts. The spa offers personalized relaxation rituals, complemented by a heated indoor pool and Japanese bath. Highlights include a panoramic outdoor pool overlooking the marina and a spa that uses seawater for its treatments. We liked the wide range of food and beverage options, including 4 restaurants with different orientations. The Real Marina is also a convenient base for exploring the islands of the Ria Formosa, accessible by boat from the nearby marina. This is an address we recommend to those who wish to combine luxury with the discovery of the Algarve’s natural heritage.

A gym overlooking the pool and a massage service complete the wellness offering. Perched on the cliffs of Porto de Mós, the Boutique Hotel Vivenda Miranda totally impressed us. The panoramic pool and garden overlooking the ocean create a setting that’s hard to forget. This former private residence is distinguished by its original decor, featuring restored murals and antique furniture. Restaurant Mirandus enjoys the same spectacular view of the rocky escarpments of the beach below. You can also practice yoga in the garden pavilion facing the sea. We recommend this address for a romantic or intimate stay, away from the hustle and bustle of the big beach resorts.

We were seduced by its rooftop infinity pool, which offers an unobstructed view of the Atlantic Ocean. The sober, functional decor of the rooms contributes to the restful atmosphere. If you prefer a vacation without crowds or excessive entertainment, this is the place for you. What’s more, Albufeira’s beaches and lively center are within easy reach, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds. Here you’ll find a good balance between 4-star comfort and unspoilt calm.

For those looking for an unusual accommodation experience, The Homeboat Company offers the chance to sleep on the water, aboard floating apartments moored at Albufeira Marina. We enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere of the port and the unique feeling of staying on a modern, well-equipped barge. Located in the heart of Albufeira’s old town, the adults-only Boutique Hotel Vila Origens boasts 19th-century Hispano-Moorish-inspired architecture and an ancient 12th-century defensive wall. We were charmed by the historical character, which is quite rare in the region, and which lends the establishment a singular atmosphere. The elegantly decorated rooms offer modern comforts without betraying the identity of the site. Its immediate proximity to the beach and the lively streets of the historic center make it an ideal base for exploring Albufeira on foot. The spa, with sauna and steam room, completes the wellness offer. You’ll appreciate the tranquility of this hotel, particularly suited to a couple’s getaway.
