  • Don’t take a car that’s too wide, as old towns have narrow streets and small parking spaces.

The beaches of Lagos are among the most spectacular in Europe. We were dazzled by Praia do Camilo, a veritable jewel nestled between sculptural cliffs. This beach is one of the must-visit spots in the Algarve, captivating us with its wave-like rock formations and natural arches. The Praia Dona Ana also seduced us with its immense central pinnacle and impressive golden cliffs. Portimão’s beaches offer the perfect balance of entertainment and natural beauty. We admired the Praia da Rocha, emblematic for its spectacular cliffs and golden sand stretching as far as the eye can see. This dynamic beach has won us over with its lively atmosphere, combining beach relaxation and water sports activities. The Praia dos Três Castelos charmed us with its sculpted rock formations and more intimate ambience, while the Praia dos Careanos seduced us with its ochre cliffs creating a striking contrast with the ocean.

Praia dos Pescadores (Albufeira): view

Albufeira is first and foremost a seaside destination, and its beaches are among the finest in the Algarve. Praia do Peneco (the town’s main beach), Praia dos Pescadores and Praia da Oura are all within easy reach of the town center, either on foot or by public transport. We enjoyed the diversity of these beaches: some are large and family-friendly, others more intimate, nestling between golden cliffs. The sand is fine and golden, the sea generally calm and the water crystal-clear. You can spread out your towel in the sun, swim in the Atlantic or sip a cocktail in one of the beach bars while admiring the sunset.

Ease of getting around these cities/regions

Getting around Lagos

crosswalks in lagos

Lagos is easily accessible on foot in its historic center. We liked the compactness of the old town, making it easy to discover everything. To reach the most spectacular beaches, such as Ponta da Piedade, a car or organized excursions are practical.

Getting around Portimão

city center - portimao

Portimão is well connected by public transport and is a reasonable size. We found it easy to navigate between the town center, the marina and the main beaches, with the emphasis on walking. Connections to Ferragudo are also regular and convenient.

Getting around Albufeira

parking albufeira

Albufeira has a clear organization between the perched old town and the seaside area. We appreciate how easy it is to get around each area on foot, even if the gradients can be surprising. Shuttle buses and cabs provide easy connections between the various districts.

Our review

Portimão earns our preference for its ease of travel and good connections. We found this destination particularly convenient for families and travelers wishing to avoid transport constraints.

Can we visit all three cities on the same trip?

Absolutely! The proximity of the 3 destinations makes it easy to combine them on the same trip. We recommend a minimum of one week or 10 days to fully appreciate each city. Lagos and Portimão can also be visited on day trips from Albufeira, which makes an excellent central base.
