We were charmed by its authentic atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of the region’s large seaside resorts.

Yes, Tavira is worth a visit. It’s one of the prettiest towns in the Algarve, with a charming historic center, exceptional beaches on the barrier island of Ilha de Tavira, and a relaxed way of life that we really enjoyed.

1. Get lost in the historic district
We thought the historic center of Tavira was very pretty. Its cobblestone streets, houses with facades adorned with azulejos, and typical openwork chimneys create a picturesque atmosphere. The Roman bridge spanning the Gilão River is the symbol of the city. Its seven stone arches form a natural lookout point overlooking the riverbanks.

2. Visit Tavira Castle
Perched atop the old town, Tavira Castle stands on a site that was already fortified during the Moorish period. Although it was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, it still retains part of its original walls. We climbed up to the ramparts to enjoy a remarkable view of the city’s rooftops. Inside the enclosure, a garden offers a welcome haven of tranquility. The tour is short—allow 30 to 45 minutes—but the views from the towers are well worth the climb.

3. Take the little tourist train
For a fun way to explore the city, Tavira’s little tourist train is a great option, both for families and for those who want to get a general overview of all the sights before exploring on foot. The tour winds through the historic neighborhoods, follows the river, and takes you past the must-see landmarks. We find this kind of walk helpful for getting our bearings in a new city, especially when cobblestone streets and hills make walking more tiring. 4. Admire the Igreja da Misericórdia
The Igreja da Misericórdia is one of the many churches in Tavira. Take a look at its Renaissance-style gate. We thought it was very beautiful. Inside, the blue-and-white azulejos that cover the walls depict scenes from the lives of the saints. The church is also a good starting point for exploring the many religious buildings scattered throughout the city—Tavira has no fewer than 37 of them!

5. Explore the Municipal Museum and the Palácio da Galeria
The Tavira Municipal Museum is housed in the Palácio da Galeria, a 16th-century palace with spacious rooms and architecture characteristic of the Portuguese Renaissance. The collections trace the history of the city from prehistoric times to the present day through ceramics, Islamic artifacts, and archaeological finds from local excavations. You’ll be surprised by the richness of the collection devoted to the Umayyad period, which attests to Tavira’s importance during the Arab occupation. In our opinion, the palace itself is worth a visit, with its inner courtyard and rooms featuring ornate ceilings.

6. Explore the Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo
Situated next to the castle,the Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo is one of the oldest churches in Tavira. It was built on the site of a mosque after the Christian reconquest in the 13th century, and several successive renovations have given it its current appearance, which blends Gothic and Baroque elements. We were struck by the simplicity of its interior, which contrasts with the ornate decor of some of the city’s other churches. It houses the tombs of seven knights of the Order of Santiago, whose tombstones adorn the floor of the nave. The plaza, surrounded by orange trees, is the perfect spot for a peaceful break right in the heart of the historic district.

7. Marvel at the lagoon and salt flats of Tavira
Around Tavira, the salt flats, marshes, and canals form a landscape that we found soothing and ideal for birdwatching: flamingos, egrets, and avocets. A boat tour from Tavira is the best way to discover its secrets. You can also opt for a 4WD jeep adventure to explore the salt marshes and natural areas that are harder to reach on foot.

8. Enjoy the beaches of Tavira
In our opinion, the beaches of Tavira are among the most beautiful in the Algarve. Praia da Ilha de Tavira, accessible by ferry from the waterfront, is a long stretch of fine sand on a pristine barrier island. Praia de Cabanas features shallow, calm waters, making it ideal for families. In addition, Praia da Terra Estreita is a lesser-known option, prized for its pristine sand and unspoiled setting.
9. Explore the Tavira Municipal Market
The Mercado Municipal de Tavira, located on the banks of the Gilão River, is a small, charming covered market near the riverfront. Every morning, the market stalls offer freshly caught fish, vegetables from the garden, regional cheeses, and seasonal fruit. We recommend visiting on Saturday morning, when the market is at its liveliest. You’ll also find local crafts and regional specialties there—perfect for bringing home an authentic souvenir.

10. Have Fun at the Camera Obscura
Tavira is home to an optical curiosity that we highly recommend: the Câmara Obscura. This device, which projects a 360° panoramic view of the city in real time onto a concave screen, offers a unique perspective on Tavira and its surroundings. The commentary accompanying the screening provides information about the main landmarks visible in the footage. You’ll get to see the rooftops, the castle, the river, and the salt flats from an unusual angle. The tower itself is a renovated former water tower, and the climb up to the screening room already offers some beautiful views.

Vila Real de Santo António
Located 30 minutes east of Tavira, Vila Real de Santo António is worth a stop. This city, founded by the Marquis of Pombal in the 18th century, was built on a grid plan reminiscent of Lisbon’s Baixa district. Its central square, Praça Marquês de Pombal, is surrounded by symmetrical buildings that display great architectural coherence. We love its authentic Portuguese provincial town atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of tourism. From its seaside location, a ferry crosses the Guadiana River to Ayamonte, Spain, for a unique cross-border excursion.
Faro and the Eastern Algarve Hinterland
Faro, the administrative capital of the Algarve, is located 30 minutes from Tavira. Its historic center, surrounded by ramparts, and its cathedral are worth a visit. Check out our article on things to do in Faro to learn more.
Castro Marim
About 30 minutes east of Tavira, Castro Marim is worth a stop to see its medieval castle overlooking the Guadiana salt marshes. The view of the Spanish border and the town of Ayamonte is breathtaking. The surrounding salt flats are home to an abundance of birdlife, especially during the migration season.

How to get there

By train, the Faro–Vila Real de Santo António line serves Tavira with several daily departures from Faro (about 35 minutes). Regional buses also connect Tavira to the main cities in the Algarve.
You can also choose to visit Tavira on a day trip and opt for an organized tour from Albufeira, for example. In our opinion, this is the most comfortable option.
Parking in Tavira
The Calçada da Galeria 8 parking lot is the closest to downtown. We recommend that you leave your car at the entrance to the city and walk to the center: the distances are short, and most of the sights are just a few minutes’ walk away. During peak season, seats may be harder to come by.
Helpful Tips for Visiting Tavira
How long and when?
Plan on spending a full day visiting the historic center, its monuments, and museums, and enjoying the beach. Two days give you time to explore at a more leisurely pace, perhaps adding a trip to the lagoon or a visit to nearby villages. In our opinion, the best time to visit is from May through June and from September through October. The weather is nice, the beaches are less crowded, and prices are more affordable than in the height of summer. In July and August, the town welcomes more visitors but retains a more peaceful atmosphere than the major seaside resorts of the Algarve.
Tour directions, map and difficulty
We recommend starting at the castle to get an overview, then heading back down toward the center to visit the Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo and the Igreja da Misericórdia. The walk along the Gilão River and the Roman bridge makes for a nice transition before heading to the Palácio da Galeria and the Torre de Tavira. The streets in the city center are cobblestone and sometimes sloped: comfortable shoes are recommended. The entire center is easy to explore on foot.
Visiting with children
Tavira is a great place for families. The beaches at Ilha de Tavira and Cabanas, with their calm, shallow waters, are ideal for young children. The little tourist train is also a pleasant alternative for children who might get tired of walking. Finally, a boat tour of the lagoon to see flamingos and migratory birds can be a wonderful experience for the whole family.

We haven’t tried any restaurants in Tavira yet.
