Why visit Ponta da Piedade
Is Ponta da Piedade worth a visit? Our opinion:
Ponta da Piedade is definitely worth a visit. This rocky promontory is one of the Algarve’s most spectacular coastal landscapes. We marveled at the geological formations sculpted by erosion over the millennia: natural arches, sea caves, stone pillars and pinnacles emerging from the crystal-clear waters.
It’s one of the region’s top attractions and a must-see in Lagos.

Our favorite moments
We particularly enjoyed several aspects of Ponta da Piedade:
- The diversity of views from the cliff tops
- the peaceful atmosphere of sunset, when the first golden light illuminates the ochre cliffs
- Descending the 190 steps to sea level gave us a unique perspective on the arches and caves, allowing us to better appreciate the power of marine erosion.
- Kayak discovery, an unforgettable experience! View options

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN THE Algarve
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Don’t take a car that’s too wide, as old towns have narrow streets and small parking spaces.
- For more choice, book early.

How to get there? Access road
By car (or bike), you’ll take well-signposted roads from Lagos, making it easy to get to the site. We recommend this option for greater flexibility in your visit schedule.
By public transport, you can take the line 2 bus from Lagos to Praia Dona Ana, then finish off on foot along the coast, a pleasant 10-15min walk.
In summer, a tourist train also runs between Lagos and Ponta da Piedade. If you prefer not to drive, several organized tours from Lagos include a visit to the promontory. Take your ticket
By boat/kayak, see section below. Or view the options directly.

Parking
The Ponta da Piedade parking lot is located in the immediate vicinity of the lighthouse.
We’ve found that it offers reasonable capacity, but can fill up quickly, particularly in the peak summer season and during afternoon rush hours.
If the main parking lot is full, you can also park in the parking lots of nearby beaches such as Praia Dona Ana or Praia do Camilo, then walk to the site. We recommend arriving early in the morning or late in the day to avoid parking problems.

Useful tips: duration, schedules, difficulties…
Best time to visit, opening hours and prices
The best time to visit Ponta da Piedade depends on your priorities.
- If you’re looking for peace and quiet, the early hours of the morning, between 7 and 9 a.m., when the site remains peaceful and the soft light of sunrise sublimates the golden cliffs, will appeal to you.
- Late afternoons, from 5pm onwards, also offer a magical atmosphere with spectacular sunsets, although you won’t be alone in admiring this spectacle.
- If you want to explore below sea level, choose low or medium tide for easier access to the rock formations.
- Access to the site is free and open all year round, with no time restrictions.
- In summer, avoid the middle of the day (11 a.m.-3 p.m.) due to the intense heat and peak tourist numbers.

Length of visit and main difficulties
The length of your visit to Ponta da Piedade will vary according to how much you want to explore.
For a simple walk along the cliffs and a few photos from the viewpoints, allow 30-45min.
If you’d like to take the staircase down to sea level to explore the rock formations, allow 1h to 1h30. We recommend you allow at least 2 hours if you wish to enjoy the site to the full, combining the walk to the summit and the descent.
The main difficulties concern the 190-step staircase leading down to the sea: although the steps are in good condition, the climb back up can be exhausting in very hot weather.
The terrain at the top of the cliffs has areas without safety barriers, requiring caution and vigilance, especially with children. Wear closed-toe shoes suitable for walking, as the ground can be slippery and the volcanic rock rough.

Visiting with children
We saw children visiting with their parents.
It’s up to you to decide, depending on your children’s ability to go up and down a lot of steps, and not to run all over the place because it’s dangerous.
But it’s a great adventure and they love it!
Catering, Toilets and Facilities
Ponta da Piedade offers basic facilities for visitors.
- public toilets located near the main parking lot, close to the lighthouse.
- café-restaurant, Restaurant Sol Nascente, with terrace and panoramic view of the coastline, ideal for a refreshing break or light meal.
- For more varied dining options, you’ll need to head to the nearby beaches of Praia do Camilo or Praia Dona Ana, both just a few minutes away by car, or return to downtown Lagos, which is packed with restaurants offering fresh fish and Portuguese specialties.
- We advise you to bring water and snacks, especially if you’re planning an extended visit, as on-site options remain limited.

Walk to the top of the Ponta da Piedade cliffs
Cliff-top walk
The walk to the top of the Ponta da Piedade cliffs is the site’s main activity, and the one we highly recommend. You’ll discover multiple rocky promontories to admire the arches, caves and pillars from different angles.
There are wooden platforms and otherwise the terrain is generally flat and accessible, although some passages require care due to erosion. We advise you to walk carefully along the edge of the cliffs to discover spectacular views of the geological formations below.
On a clear day, the turquoise water contrasts beautifully with the golden rocks, creating exceptional photographic opportunities.

Panoramic views from the summit
The views from the top of the cliffs are varied and each more impressive than the last. We were captivated by the diversity of perspectives depending on where you stand.
To the east, you’ll discover the small beach of Balança (Praia da Balança) nestling between rock formations, accessible only by sea.

Looking south, the plunging views reveal the rocky “beach” of Ponta da Piedade, where the boarding pontoon for boat excursions is located. We particularly enjoyed the overlapping natural arches, creating remarkable photographic compositions.
To the west, the impressive white cliffs of Praia do Canavial stretch into the distance. Take the time to explore the various headlands and enjoy these exceptional panoramas to the full.

Descent to the “beach” of Ponta da Piedade
The 190-step staircase
The staircase down to sea level is a must-do experience at Ponta da Piedade, although it does require some physical effort. We counted 190 steps on our descent, as opposed to the 182 usually mentioned in guidebooks. The steps, cut into the rock and reinforced in places, zigzag along the cliff face.

We appreciated how this gradual descent gradually revealed new perspectives on the surrounding rock formations. At around two-thirds of the way up, you’ll already enjoy a spectacular close-up view of one of the site’s most beautiful natural arches.
Bear in mind that you’ll have to climb these same steps on the way back, which can be tiring, especially in hot weather. Bring water and take your time on this climb.

Exploring sea level
Once at the bottom of the staircase, you reach a particular rocky area known as the “beach” of Ponta da Piedade, although it’s not really a sandy beach.
We explored this fascinating space made up of rocky plates shaped by marine erosion. At low or medium tide, you can venture cautiously between the formations to observe up close the stone arches, caves and pillars that emerge from the water.
To reach the last areas that can be explored, you’ll have to use a rope fixed in the rock rather than steps. This part of the site offers unique perspectives on the geological formations seen from sea level, completely different from those admired from the top of the cliffs.

Precautions and safety
Be careful!
- Don’t forget to come before low tide, so you have time to explore in complete safety.
- Rocks are particularly rough and slippery when wet, making it essential to wear closed shoes with a good grip.
- We’ve observed that waves can spray water onto rocks even in calm weather, creating treacherous surfaces.
- If you’re traveling with children, keep an eye on them at all times, and don’t let them get too close to the edge.
- Avoid venturing into this area in rough seas or if you’re not comfortable with your balance on uneven ground.

Boat trip to Ponta da Piedade and exploration of the caves
Option 1: Motorboat excursion
Motorboat excursions are the most popular and comfortable way to discover Ponta da Piedade from the water. We appreciated how these small boats could squeeze through numerous sea caves and narrow passages, offering an adventure in exploration.
The captains know the coastline inside out, guiding you to the most spectacular formations while sharing anecdotes about the site’s geology and history.
- Small open-air boat: ideal for getting up close to the natural caves. Its small size makes it easy to squeeze into rocky cavities. – see our current offers!

Option 2: Kayak exploration
Exploring Ponta da Piedade by kayak offers a more active and intimate experience than motorboat tours. We particularly recommend this option for those seeking a more authentic and sporty adventure. Paddling at your own pace allows you to take time to admire every detail of the rock formations and to stop as long as you like in front of the panoramas that captivate you.
Departures are possible from Lagos Marina and several of the surrounding beaches.
See all options.
For more tips and photos, see our article on our kayak tour.

Option 3: Stand-up paddle (SUP)
Stand-up paddling is an interesting alternative for exploring Ponta da Piedade, although this option is best suited to those who have already mastered the art. We watched several SUP sailors navigate between the rock formations with ease, enjoying a unique perspective standing on their boards.

Ponta da Piedade sea caves
The sea caves are one of Ponta da Piedade’s major attractions and well worth exploring by water. Although the site doesn’t have as many caves as the famous Benagil cave further east, those at Ponta da Piedade nevertheless offer memorable experiences. We were fascinated by the way the light penetrated certain cavities, creating a play of colors on the rock faces ranging from golden to orange-red.

Ponta da Piedade lighthouse and other panoramic views
Faro da Ponta da Piedade
The Ponta da Piedade lighthouse (Farol da Ponta da Piedade) stands at the center of the promontory and is an emblematic landmark of the site. We admired its distinctive yellow-painted quadrangular tower. Built between 1912 and 1913, this lighthouse bears witness to over a century of maritime history. It was electrified in 1952 to improve its light output, then automated in 1983, no longer requiring the permanent presence of a guard.
Unfortunately, the lighthouse is not open to the public and you won’t be able to access its interior or climb the tower to enjoy a view from its lantern. Nevertheless, the area around the lighthouse offers excellent views of the coastline and is an excellent starting point for exploring the surrounding cliffs.

Heading west from the Ponta da Piedade lighthouse, you’ll discover an impressive view of Praia do Canavial. We were struck by the striking contrast between this imposing white cliff and the golden tones of the rock formations at Ponta da Piedade. This massive cliff rises majestically above the ocean, stretching for several hundred meters along the coast.

One of the most beautiful places to watch the sunset in the Algarve
Ponta da Piedade is one of the Algarve’s most popular sunset spots, and this status is well-deserved. We’ve been lucky enough to witness this natural spectacle, and understand why so many visitors flock here at the end of the day. The promontory’s position, facing south and west, offers an unobstructed view of the marine horizon, where the sun plunges into the Atlantic.
Unlike most of the Algarve’s south-facing beaches, which offer less spectacular sunsets, Ponta da Piedade is ideally situated.
We recommend arriving around 30 minutes before sunset to choose your spot and take full advantage of the changing colors. But be prepared to share this magical moment with other admirers, as the site logically attracts many photographers and romantics at the end of the day.

Other nearby attractions
You can combine your visit to Ponta da Piedade with these nearby attractions:
- Praia Dona Ana, a spectacular beach framed by golden cliffs (5-minute drive)
- Praia do Camilo, a small beach accessible via a staircase carved into the cliff (3-minute drive)
- Historic center of Lagos with its ramparts, churches and cobbled streets (10min drive), one of the most beautiful towns in the Algarve.
Frequently asked questions
Ponta da Piedade or Benagil: which to choose?
If you have to choose between Ponta da Piedade and Benagil, these two sites offer different and complementary experiences.
Benagil is famous for its spectacular cathedral cave, accessible only by sea, a unique site that alone justifies the trip. However, for a complete exploration of the coastline with its many rock formations (arches, pillars, various caves) visible both on foot and by boat, we give a slight preference to Ponta da Piedade.
The cliff-top walk at Ponta da Piedade also offers greater flexibility and is free of charge, unlike Benagil, where access to the cave requires a boat or kayak tour for a fee.
Ideally, if your schedule allows, we recommend visiting both sites for a complete experience of the Algarve’s geological wonders.

Is it possible to swim in Ponta da Piedade?
Although the rocky area at the foot of the staircase is known as the “beach” of Ponta da Piedade, we strongly advise against swimming here. Sea currents are particularly strong and dangerous, even for experienced swimmers. The absence of sand and the presence of rough rocks also make access to the water difficult and risky. What’s more, the site is not supervised by lifeguards. For safe swimming near Ponta da Piedade, we recommend you visit nearby beaches such as Praia Dona Ana or Praia do Camilo, just a few minutes away.
