Where to go in Lagos for the best beaches?
On the way to Ponta de Piedade, we recommend you explore the beaches dominated by the impressive golden cliffs that give the region its charm. Secluded coves such as Praia do Camilo or Praia do Canavial offer magnificent natural settings. We particularly liked these beaches nestled between gigantic rock formations, which are a spectacle in themselves!
1. Praia do Camilo

Why do we love it?
This beach is one of the places to visit in the Algarve. Situated between Praia Dona Ana and Ponta da Piedade, it charmed us! Magnificent cliffs and wave-like rock formations sculpted by the sea stand side by side with picturesque arches. At high tide, the stretch of sand shrinks and there’s less room for sunbathing. The crystal-clear waters invite you to snorkel. We also recommend this activity for admiring the seabed. Did you know that small caves are hidden along the cliffs?

2. Praia Dona Ana

Why do we love it?
One of the of the Algarve’s most beautiful beachesPraia Dona Ana will seduce you with its large area of golden sand and impressive cliffs. We were captivated by the huge pinnacle in the center of the beach, with its feet in the water, offering a unique spectacle. A treat for photographers like us! The name of the beach comes from a nun called Ana who lived in a convent in Lagos. Thanks to a tunnel leading to the beach, she was the only survivor of an attack during the First World War.

Nestled near Ponta da Piedade, the Praia do Canavial totally won us over. We fell in love with this unspoilt stretch of sand, which is nevertheless difficult to access. We were seduced by its unique setting, with high orange cliffs contrasting with the blue of the ocean. It’s a haven of peace for travelers in search of authenticity and privacy, much less frequented by tourists. Part of the beach is naturist.

La Praia dos Estudantes is a charming little cove framed by golden cliffs and adjoining Praia da Batata. Located close to Lagos city center, it is dominated by the Bridge of the Old Fort of Pinhão. We were seduced by its unique setting, which gives it a special charm, between history and nature. In fact, it’s one of the most photographed beaches in the region! Frequently asked questions
When to swim in Lagos
The water temperature is particularly pleasant from May to the end of September. This period also benefits from increased surveillance by lifeguards, present daily on most beaches to ensure your safety. We particularly recommend the months of June and September for warm water, while avoiding the crowds of July and August. Even in winter, the Algarve’s mild climate makes for great walks along the beaches, although swimming is reserved for the more adventurous.

What beaches are not within walking distance of Ponta da Piedade?
Some of Lagos’ beaches are jealously guarded in their natural beauty, accessible only by sea. This is particularly true of Praia do Barranco do Martinho and Praia dos Pinheiros, 2 hidden gems along the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade. We highly recommend discovering them on a boat trip – a unique opportunity to admire their spectacular rock formations and turquoise waters. These unspoilt coves, sheltered from the crowds, reveal all their splendour when approached from the ocean. – see activity details.

Is Praia do Pinhão closed to the public?
For safety reasons, the Praia do Pinhão is currently inaccessible to visitors, as the wooden staircase providing access has been completely condemned. This situation, although disappointing, is necessary to guarantee the safety of travelers due to the instability of the cliffs in this area. But don’t miss the spectacular view from the sea. – see activity details.
