There’s no shortage of accommodation in the Algarve, and some establishments stand out for their character, meticulous decor and intimate atmosphere. From boutique hotels nestled in the old town of Albufeira to ancient palaces perched on the cliffs of Lagos, and original concepts such as the floating apartments of Marina, the region offers a palette of singular establishments. We’ve selectedthe 12 best boutique hotels in the Algarve, each with its own unique identity.
In this article, discover our selection of the region’s 12 best boutique hotels, charming establishments spread between Portimão, Albufeira, Lagos and Faro.

This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.
The best boutique hotels in the Algarve: summary
The notion of a boutique hotel covers a wide range of realities in the Algarve. Here you’ll find adult-only establishments in the heart of historic town centers, private residences converted into charming accommodations, carefully designed aparthotels and even more unusual lodging concepts. What they have in common: a human scale, a strong identity and a particular attention to decoration and welcome.
Lagos is home to several of our favorite addresses, from the Boutique Hotel Vivenda Miranda perched on the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade to the Lagos Avenida Hotel facing the marina. Albufeira is home to adult-only boutique hotels well located in its historic center. Faro and the surrounding area are better known for their more discreet, but carefully appointed, charming aparthotels in the city center. Finally, Portimão is home to one of the region’s most beautiful! We recommend booking early, as boutique hotels generally have a limited number of rooms and often sell out in high season.

Our three favorites:
- Bela Vista Hotel & Spa – Relais & Châteaux (Portimão): historic character and 5-star services, an address without equal in the region. Check photos, photos and availability
- Boutique Hotel Vila Origens (Albufeira) – Adults only: a boutique hotel combining 19th-century Hispano-Moorish architecture and modern comforts. Check photos, photos and availability
- Boutique Hotel Vivenda Miranda (Lagos) former private residence perched on the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade with panoramic pool overlooking the ocean. Check photos, photos and availability

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN THE Algarve
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Don’t take a car that’s too wide, as old towns have narrow streets and small parking spaces.
- For more choice, book early.

1. Bela Vista Hotel & Spa – Relais & Châteaux (Portimão)

Why stay there?
This is undoubtedly our absolute favorite among the Algarve’s boutique hotels. Perched on a cliff overlooking Praia da Rocha, this legendary establishment is probably the oldest hotel in the region, dating back to 1934. Classified as a Relais & Châteaux, it combines the charm of 20th-century history with the services of a contemporary luxury hotel. Its 38 rooms, in three separate buildings – the Palacere (1918), the Casa Azul (1930s) and the Bela Vista Jardim (2011) – each offer a different atmosphere. The decor, rich and elaborate, crosses the eras with elegance. We were lucky enough to stay in the sea-view Casa Azul and have particularly fond memories of it. The Michelin-starred gourmet restaurant and 400m² L’Occitane spa complete a truly exceptional experience. If you’re looking for a boutique hotel in the Algarve, this address deserves to be at the top of your list.

We were seduced by this historic character, which is quite rare in the Algarve’s hotel landscape, and which lends the establishment an atmosphere all its own. The elegantly appointed rooms offer modern comforts without betraying the identity of the site. The spa, with sauna and steam room, and year-round outdoor pool complete the wellness offering. Perched on the cliffs of Porto de Mós, the Boutique Hotel Vivenda Miranda totally impressed us with its location and character. The panoramic pool and garden overlooking the ocean create a setting hard to match. This former private residence is distinguished by its original, well-crafted decor, featuring murals and restored antique furniture. Restaurant Mirandus enjoys the same spectacular view of the rocky escarpments below. You can also practice yoga in the garden pavilion facing the sea. An experience that, in our opinion, sums up the spirit of this hotel. It’s an ideal address for a romantic getaway, far from the hustle and bustle of the big beach resorts. Ideally located in the heart of the old town opposite the Lagos marina, the Lagos Avenida Hotel is an address that combines assertive style with a privileged location. The bohemian-chic decor of the bright, cocooning rooms creates a warm atmosphere from the moment you arrive. The rooftop, with its heated pool, offers a breathtaking view of the harbor entrance and is a particularly popular place to relax in the evening. We had one of our best breakfasts in Lagos at the Avenida Restaurant, one of the restaurants we recommend in the city. How about a cocktail by the pool while watching the sun set over the rooftops? Each apartment has a kitchen, toilet, shower and terrace, offering all the comforts you need for a pleasant stay. The port’s restaurants are in the immediate vicinity, and nautical excursions from the marina are easily organized. Restaurant Alecrin’s cuisine, prepared using produce from the establishment’s own vegetable garden, reflects a coherent approach to the holiday experience. We recommend this hotel for its calm, its character and the quality of its spa, which includes a heated indoor pool and a Japanese bath.
