Why stay in Faro?

We were charmed by this capital of the Algarve, which skilfully blends historical heritage with a seaside atmosphere. You’ll discover a preserved historic center, interesting museums and a fascinating multicultural heritage. Its proximity to the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve and its fine sandy beaches make it an ideal destination for a long, sunny weekend or a stopover before exploring the Algarve. It’s one of the most beautiful towns in the Algarve!

Faro - Why stay in Faro?

Faro’s best places to stay: map

Here’s our map to help you get your bearings, with the main areas to stay in Faro:

map best areas to stay in faro
Map of areas to stay in Faro

Staying in the historic center

Protected by its ramparts, Faro’s historic center has a timeless atmosphere. We enjoyed strolling through the cobbled streets lined with whitewashed facades, between the Cathedral, museums and shady squares. In the evening, calm gradually returns, creating a serene atmosphere. It’s an ideal base for exploring the city on foot, especially if you’re a lover of heritage and authentic places.

old town faro

Benefits:

  • Immediate access to the city’s main attractions (cathedral, museums, Arco da Vila…)
  • Excellent choice of small restaurants and cafés, including Faro’s best restaurants
  • Historical ambience and Portuguese charm

Disadvantages:

  • Difficult or paid parking in narrow streets
  • Little nightlife compared to other Algarve towns
  • No beach within walking distance

Our favorite hotel: Amália Boutique Suites & Studios

Staying near the Marina

The Marina de Faro embodies the more contemporary face of the city. We enjoyed strolling along the quays at the end of the day, between the boats and the lively terraces. It’s a lively district, especially in the evening, and very convenient for embarking to the islands of the Ria Formosa. The atmosphere is more cosmopolitan, with a good balance between city and seaside.

marina faro

Benefits:

  • View of the boats and the Ria Formosa
  • Many restaurants and bars
  • Close to departures for sea excursions
  • Close to the historic center

Disadvantages:

  • Busiest district in high season
  • Sometimes higher rates
  • Potentially noisy in the evening

Our favorite hotel: AP Eva Senses

Staying downtown

Just a few minutes’ walk from the historic center, Faro’s modern downtown offers a good compromise between local life and urban comfort. We found the area very convenient, with quick access to shops, the station and everyday services. This area also offers a variety of accommodations for different budgets, in a more functional environment.

faro shopping street

Benefits:

  • Wide choice of hotels, restaurants and services
  • Close to transport links (train station, buses, cabs)
  • Easier parking than in the old town
  • Shops and services within easy reach

Disadvantages:

  • Less architectural charm than the old town
  • Denser traffic
  • A more urban and modern atmosphere

Our favorite hotel: 3HB Faro

Staying in Olhão

Located 15 minutes away by train or car, Olhão offers a more local and authentic alternative. This fishing port won us over with its seaside market, white cubist architecture and lively alleyways. It’s an excellent base for visiting the islands of the Ria Formosa and the region’s main attractions.

olhao

Benefits:

  • Authentic fishing village atmosphere
  • Good value for money
  • Famous fish markets

Disadvantages:

  • Transport to Faro required
  • Fewer tourist attractions
  • More limited nightlife

Our favorite hotel: Real Marina Hotel & Spa

Other useful tips to keep in mind

  • Faro’s high season runs from June to September, with a large number of visitors in July and August. If you’re looking for more peace and quiet in the sunshine, opt for May, June (excluding festivals) or September.
  • Parking can quickly become a headache, especially in the historic center. Some hotels offer parking, but it’s best to check this before booking. If you don’t have a car, the town is still pleasant to explore on foot, and excursions to the islands are easily accessible on foot or by boat from the marina. Several underground parking lots are available in the vicinity of the center. We recommend the following ones Parque de Estacionamento Saba da Pontinhalocated at Largo das Mouras Velhas, 8000-261 in Faro. Central, secure parking.
  • Local public transport (city buses) is a convenient and economical option for exploring the city and surrounding area. Regular shuttle buses also run between the town center and the main beach. View route maps, timetables and fares here.
