Is the village of Ferragudo worth a visit?
Yes, Ferragudo is definitely worth a visit. In fact, it’s one of the most beautiful villages in the Algarve! Situated at the mouth of the River Arade, opposite Portimão, it offers a traditional setting with its charming houses rising up the hill to the church. We were particularly taken by the authenticity of this fishing village, which has managed to retain all its character despite the Algarve’s major tourist development. We highly recommend a visit to Ferragudo during your stay in Portimão.
1. Strolling through the heart of the village

We discovered the authentic atmosphere of this fishing village, which has managed to preserve its traditional character. Its narrow streets climb to the top of the village, where we spotted a small tower topped by a crenellated crown. The white and colorful houses with their flower-filled facades and the church overlooking the bay create a charming picture. You might even come across some locals drying their laundry in the street, a living testimony to the everyday life of the locals!
Practical advice
- Sloping village with paved ground
- Presence of stairs
- A good choice of restaurants in the center
- Good shoes recommended

2. Contemplating the view over Ferragudo

If you’re coming from Portimão by car, after crossing the Ponte Velha, drive gently along Rua Infante Dom Henrique. You’ll come across an unfinished parking lot at the side of the road. Park your car and walk towards the riverbank to discover a superb view of Ferragudo, the Arade River and the Port of Portimão on the opposite bank. We found that this location offered a magnificent view of the village. A short stop that’s worth it just to take a pretty picture!
Practical advice
- Free roadside parking
- Accessible by car or on foot from the center of Ferragudo
- Ideal for photos
3. Admire Ferragudo Castle from the Praia da Angrinha

Although the interior of the castle is not open to visitors, we were able to observe it from the outside. The Praia da Angrinha offers the best view of this fortress that watches over the river mouth. You’ll appreciate the imposing architecture of this castle, which contrasts with the turquoise waters of the beach. Take advantage of this visit to combine swimming and heritage discovery!
Practical advice
- Outdoor viewing only
- Accessible from the beach

4. Enjoy a stay in Ferragudo just a stone’s throw from the sea

Take advantage of your stay in Ferragudo to spend at least one night there. The village is so charming that you’ll often want to stay a night, or even several, to discover it in a more tranquil, authentic light. Despite its modest size, the accommodation on offer is of a high standard, with several establishments ideally located close to the beaches, perfect for a relaxing stay. Among them, we particularly recommendHôtel Rural Brícia Du Mar, located around 15 minutes’ walk from the Praia dos Caneiros. This establishment features a beautiful outdoor swimming pool.
Practical advice
- Book your accommodation in advance here, especially for the high season!
- Our selection of the best hotels in Ferragudo will be available soon!
- Some hotels close in winter
5. Stroll to the little port: departure of boat tours

The Rua Infante Santo promenade, on the banks of the River Arade, leads to the small port of Ferragudo. We discovered piles of fishing crates stacked on top of each other, testimony to the village’s maritime activity. A strong smell of tide hangs in the air as the view opens out over Portimão on the other shore. Here you’ll find water cabs and boat tours on the Arade River. Some excursions also take you to the Benagil Caves!
Practical advice
- Strong tidal odor
- Water cabs available
- Boat tours on the Arade River
- Tempted by a private boat trip to Benagil and Praia da Marinha with a swim stop?
6. Visit Notre-Dame-de-la-Conception church

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição was built in 1520, then destroyed by an earthquake in 1755, before being rebuilt in a departure from the original plans. Its sleek white façade is enhanced by touches of pale yellow and topped by an elegant bell tower. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get inside during our trip. So we only appreciated the sober architecture, which faces the River Arade, creating a lovely perspective!
Practical advice
- Free admission
- Variable opening hours

Parking in Ferragudo
We found several parking options in Ferragudo. Parking is available around the village center and along the roadside on Rua Infante Dom Henrique. Parking can be tricky in high season, so we recommend arriving early in the day.

Useful tips for visiting Ferragudo
How long and when?
We recommend you allow half a day to discover the village of Ferragudo, stroll through its narrow streets, admire the port and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the historic center. A full day is ideal if you also want to relax on nearby beaches such as Praia dos Caneiros or Praia Grande.
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to visit Ferragudo. Temperatures are mild and visitor numbers are much lower, allowing you to enjoy the authenticity of the village to the full. Summer is perfect for swimming and beach activities, but it’s also the busiest time of the year. For greater peace and quiet, we recommend visiting early in the morning or at the end of the day, when the light is at its best and the atmosphere calmer.

Tour direction and difficulty
We recommend you start your visit in the historic heart of Ferragudo, around the church and the narrow streets, then head for the charming little port. After lunch in the village, you can gradually make your way to the beaches, such as Praia da Angrinha, the closest to the center, or take a hike along the coast.
In terms of difficulty, the village is relatively steep, with numerous narrow cobbled streets, some of them irregular, and several staircases linking the different levels. We therefore advise you to wear good walking shoes and bring plenty of water, especially in summer.

Visiting with children
Ferragudo is ideal for a family visit. Just a stone’s throw from the historic center, a playground with slides and swings lets youngsters let off steam. Children will particularly enjoy the beaches, especially Praia Grande, renowned for its spaciousness, pleasant sand, playground and family-friendly water activities.

Restaurants
We haven’t tested any of Ferragudo’s restaurants yet. But on our list, you’ll find Restaurant Benjamim Bistro or Restaurant O Barril, 2 establishments that perfectly embody the Portuguese art of living. These addresses offer authentic cuisine in a relaxed, friendly setting. You can enjoy your meal on the terrace while observing the tranquil pace of local life.

Visit Ferragudo in winter
The Algarve remains a pleasant destination even in winter, thanks to its mild temperatures and regular sunshine. We appreciated the village’s quieter atmosphere in the off-season, allowing us to stroll leisurely through the narrow streets. Please note, however, that some restaurants, hotels, shops and activities may be closed out of season. On the other hand, this is the ideal time to enjoy coastal walks, explore deserted beaches or discover the village in all its authenticity. Winter offers a more intimate and relaxing experience.
