This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.

1. Ponta da Piedade

Ponta da Piedade from the stairs

Ponta da Piedade is without doubt one of the Algarve’s most spectacular sites. From the cliffs, you can contemplate a labyrinth of golden-hued rock formations rising from the Atlantic Ocean. We spent a long time admiring the arches, caves and natural pillars sculpted by erosion. The colors vary according to the light of day, creating striking contrasts between the deep blue of the sea and the ochre of the rocks.

2. Praia da Falésia

Praia da Falésia from the viewpoint

The Praia da Falésia stretches for several kilometers, bordered by cliffs whose red, ochre and white strata create a fascinating natural tableau. This is our favorite of the Algarve’s beaches. We were impressed by the color palette, which changes according to the time of day. The contrast between the warm tones of the cliffs and the azure of the ocean is remarkable.

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN THE Algarve
  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • Don’t take a car that’s too wide, as old towns have narrow streets and small parking spaces.
  • For more choice, book early.

3. Benagil cave

Benagil cave by boat

The Benagil cave has become one of the Algarve’s most emblematic sites. This natural cathedral, with its dome open to the sky, offers a unique spectacle. We were amazed by the rays of light entering through the upper opening, illuminating the small sandy beach inside the cave.

Access is by sea only, by kayak or boat. Remember to book your excursion in advance, as this place attracts many visitors. See options.

4. View of the village of Ferragudo from Portimão

Village of Ferragudo

From the Portimão shore, the view of the village of Ferragudo on the other side of the River Arade is particularly photogenic. The white houses rise up the hill, dominated by the church, which stands out against the landscape. We particularly like this perspective in the late afternoon, when the golden light caresses the facades. What a contrast to the lively Portimão.

5. Praia da Marinha

Praia da Marinha from the top of the cliff

Praia da Marinha regularly ranks among the world’s most beautiful beaches. You’ll understand why. Framed by spectacular limestone cliffs, this cove offers breathtaking scenery. The golden sand contrasts beautifully with the turquoise water. We loved the rock formations rising out of the water near the shore, including the famous Heart of Marinha seen on many postcards.

View from the Silves fort

Silves was once the capital of the Moorish Algarve. Its red sandstone castle dominates the town and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. 9. Praia de Três Irmãos

Praia de Três Irmãos and its double arch

10. Praia de Odeceixe

Praia de Odeceixe and its lagoon

Praia de Odeceixe marks the northern limit of the Algarve. This exceptional location combines an ocean beach with an estuarine zone where the Seixe River meets the Atlantic. We loved this unique configuration, which creates two different atmospheres. The dark cliffs that frame this landscape create a striking contrast. We recommend the view from the top of the cliff to admire the whole site.

12. Algar Seco

Algar Seco

Algar Seco near Carvoeiro is a remarkable geological site. The limestone rock formations sculpted by sea and wind create an almost lunar landscape. We explored the wooden walkways winding between the rocks, which are pierced by holes and caves.

13. The coast seen from the sea

Algarve coastline from the sea: a succession of caves

To truly appreciate the beauty of the Algarvian coast, we recommend a boat trip. From the ocean, the succession of golden cliffs, sea caves and hidden beaches takes on a whole new dimension. We were impressed by the variety of geological formations visible only from the water.

We recommend departing from Portimao to Benagil and Marinha – see options

14. Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Rocha

Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Rocha

This small white chapel perched on a rocky promontory offers a charming setting facing the Atlantic, surrounded by two beautiful cliff beaches. We were charmed by the simplicity of this place. The contrast between the immaculate white of the hermitage and the golden tones of the rocks is striking.

Lac Odeleite

Lake Odeleite in the hinterland offers a stunning landscape. Seen from above, the water’s curves evoke the shape of a blue dragon winding its way through the hills. We were surprised by the beauty of this landscape, little known to the tourists who stay on the coast. The turquoise waters contrast with the green vegetation of the surrounding hills. It’s a peaceful place, ideal for a nature getaway away from the hustle and bustle of the coast. From several vantage points you can admire the meandering lake and understand why it’s nicknamed the “blue dragon”.
