The two cities are very different and offer unique experiences.
Faro is the capital of the Algarve, with a rich historical heritage, a charming medieval center and the Ria Formosa natural park.
Portimao offers a more seaside atmosphere, with its historic fishing port and spectacular beaches such as Praia da Rocha.

Portimão’s beaches offer the perfect balance of entertainment and natural beauty. We admired the Praia da Rocha, emblematic for its spectacular cliffs and golden sand stretching as far as the eye can see. This dynamic beach has won us over with its lively atmosphere, combining beach relaxation and water sports activities. The Praia dos Três Castelos charmed us with its sculpted rock formations and more intimate ambience, while the Praia dos Careanos seduced us with its ochre cliffs creating a striking contrast with the ocean.

Both towns boast excellent gastronomic offerings. Faro excels in traditional restaurants in the historic center, while Portimao is renowned for its seafood restaurants and grilled sardines. Equality.
Ease of getting around these cities/regions
Getting around Faro
Faro’s more compact size makes it easier to move around. The historic center and most attractions are within walking distance. Public transport works well, especially to the airport and the beach. Boats leave regularly for the islands of the Ria Formosa.

Getting around Portimao
Portimão is well connected by public transport and is a reasonable size. We found it easy to navigate between the town center, the marina and the main beaches, with the emphasis on walking. Connections to Ferragudo are also regular and convenient.

Can you visit Faro and Portimao on the same trip?
The two cities can easily be combined:
By car: 1 hour’s drive
By bus: regular services, approx. 1h15
By train: direct connection, approx. 1 hour
