Praia do Vau in Portimão is the perfect choice for families, thanks to its facilities and seasonal surveillance. We were won over by its large area of fine sand, offering ample space for all visitors.
In this article, you’ll find our photos and tips for making the most of your visit to Praia do Vau.

This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.
Is Praia do Vau worth the effort?
Indeed, it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Portimão, for several reasons. The region’s characteristic ochre cliffs frame this well-appointed beach. We appreciated the peace of mind provided by this secure beach, ideal for a successful vacation with family or friends. The large area of fine sand allows all visitors to fully enjoy their day at the water’s edge.

Type of beach
Sand or no sand?
The beach floor is made up of fine sand of a blond or even golden color. We loved walking around barefoot. Its pleasant texture invites relaxation and idleness.

Swimming conditions and supervision
The beach is supervised in season and has a first-aid post. We noticed the presence of signs indicating dangerous areas with a risk of falling rocks at cliff level. This surveillance allows families to enjoy swimming with greater peace of mind.

Installations
We found showers and toilets right on the beach. Sun loungers and parasols are also available for hire. These facilities contribute to the comfort of our visitors, and made for an excellent day out.

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN THE Algarve
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Don’t take a car that’s too wide, as old towns have narrow streets and small parking spaces.
- For more choice, book early.

Access from the parking lot
Access to the beach is direct from the parking lot. We appreciated this ease of access, which makes the beach particularly convenient for families with children and beach equipment.

The beach can be reached by local public transport. From Portimão city center, several bus lines serve the “Praia do Vau” stop. Find out more here.
Alternatively, you can reach the beach in just 15 minutes by bike along the marina and then the Praia da Rocha from the town center.

Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on this beach.

Reduced mobility access
The beach is indicated as wheelchair accessible. Dedicated parking spaces are reserved in the parking lot, and adapted toilets are available. We’ve found that these facilities make access easier for all visitors.

With children
This beach is ideal for a visit with children. In-season surveillance and the facilities available make it a safe choice for families. Especially since the setting is so pleasant, with the magnificent golden cliffs along the coast! The slope to enter the water is also gentle and gradual. But, as everywhere else in the Algarve, beware of the waves.

Naturism
It is not possible to practice naturism on this beach.
Other restrictions
Beware of areas marked as dangerous with the risk of falling rocks. For your own safety and that of your family and friends, we recommend that you observe these signs.

Eating out
On-site dining options include the friendly Restaurant O Rebelo. We enjoyed a simple, tasty lunch of fresh fish and crunchy vegetables.
