Yes! In one day, you can discover the city’s emblematic beaches, stroll through the historic center and walk along the seafront to enjoy its picturesque landscapes. That’s enough to see the must-sees, but if you want to explore the surrounding area or spend more time relaxing on the sand, allow a little more time. To make the most of your visit, plan your stages according to your priorities, combining walks and relaxation breaks for a day that’s both fast-paced and enjoyable.

Getting around Portimão
Portimão city center and the Zona Ribeirinha are within easy walking distance. The alleyways are well laid out, with smooth passages to facilitate wheelchair access. To reach Praia da Rocha or the city’s other beaches, it’s best to travel by car, cab or local bus – more info on the public transport network here.

Our itinerary combines a morning of culture with an afternoon of seaside fun: the best of both worlds! It’s up to you to adapt it to your own interests. We’ve also provided alternatives for families and seaside lovers, so you can replace certain activities with others that might better suit your desires.
9:30-10:30: Stroll through the city center and along the Zona Ribeirinha
Start your day by immersing yourself in the soul of Portimão. The historic center was a delight with its cobbled streets and colorful, charming facades. Take a detour to the peaceful Parc Fonte do Jardim 1 de Dezembro and theChurch of Our Lady of Conception to appreciate the city’s architectural heritage. Look up: storks’ nests dot the rooftops, adding a playful touch to your walk! Can you spot the one we’ve immortalized in our photo?
As you walk along the Zona Ribeirinha, let yourself be captivated by the comings and goings of the boats in the harbour, a lively spectacle that provides a pleasant rhythm to your stroll.
10:30-11am: Stop off at the Jesuit College Convent
Less well known than other monuments in the region, the Jesuit College Convent is well worth a visit. Its sober façade, enhanced by a touch of yellow ochre, contrasts elegantly with the richly decorated Baroque interior. Inside, the peaceful atmosphere invites contemplation, while providing a fascinating insight into local religious history. To complete your visit, don’t miss the small art gallery next door, which adds an extra cultural touch to this stopover in the heart of the city.
11am-12.30pm: Visit the Portimão Museum or take a stroll around the marina
For this part of the morning, you have 2 options, depending on your preferences. The Portimão Museumhoused in a former canning factory, offers an immersive insight into the city’s industrial and maritime history. We particularly enjoyed the reconstruction of the sardine production lines, the everyday objects and the stories of local life. It’s a great way to understand Portimão’s port identity beyond its beaches. The museum is modern, well-designed and accessible to all, offering an enriching and instructive visit.
If you prefer sea air, opt for a stroll along the Portimão Marina, located at the mouth of the River Arade. Between sea and sky, the stroll is punctuated by catamarans, sailboats and colorful buildings. On the other shore, the coastline and Ferragudo Castle add a picturesque touch to the landscape, for a more relaxing and contemplative experience.
12:30-14:30: Light lunch to get you going again!
After a morning full of sightseeing, you’re feeling hungry? For lunch, we suggest Restaurant Mãe Terra, a “slow restaurant” run by a passionate couple. This establishment offers inventive, colorful and perfectly executed vegetarian cuisine that seduced us with its creativity and original flavors. You’ll discover a respectful approach to local, seasonal produce. The warm, relaxed atmosphere makes it the perfect place to stop and recharge your batteries before continuing your tour of the city. 2:30-4pm: Take a digestive stroll along the cliffs
After an invigorating lunch, head to Praia da Rocha for some fresh air and sea breeze. It’s the perfect time for a panoramic walk along the ocean, between sand and ochre cliffs. In our opinion, the most spectacular stretch is between the Praia dos Três Castelos and the Praia dos Careanoswhere the path winds along the top of the cliffs, offering impressive views of the coast and sea. Portimão’s most beautiful beaches unfold in this area for your viewing pleasure!
If you like walking, extend your stroll to the Praia do Vau. At low tide, you can even reach the nearby beaches via the sand, for a pleasant and soothing stroll with your feet in the water. A great way to digest and enjoy the Algarve landscape.
4-6pm: Enjoy the charms of Praia dos Três Castelos
Praia dos Três Castelos is one of our favorite beaches in the Algarve and lends itself perfectly to a late afternoon of refreshing swimming, relaxing on the fine sand and exploring the little coves hidden between the rocks. Alternate between contemplating the rock formations sculpted by the sea and diving into the crystal-clear waters for a real nature bath. The surrounding cliffs also offer superb vantage points for photography, ideal for immortalizing your visit.
Weather permitting, stay until sunset: the view is simply breathtaking. The declining sun bathes the golden cliffs in a magical light, an unforgettable moment to end your day in Portimão.
6-8pm: Dinner in Praia da Rocha while waiting for the sun to set
After a busy day exploring Portimão and its beaches, it’s the perfect time to settle down in front of the ocean and enjoy a relaxing dinner. With its steady waves and Atlantic orientation, Praia da Rocha is one of the best surf spots in the Portimão region. All day long, you can watch surfers tame the rollers, whether they’re beginners or more seasoned surfers. From the beach, we enjoyed the rhythmic spectacle of the boards. We even witnessed a very experienced windsurfer gliding with ease between the waves and the ochre cliffs of the Algarve!

Snorkeling along the golden cliffs
Portimão’s golden cliffs provide a spectacular backdrop for snorkeling. Sculpted by wind and sea, they form sheltered coves and rich seabeds, perfect for observing colorful fish, anemones and small rocky cavities. We particularly recommend Praia de Boião and Praia dos Três Castelos, where the clear waters offer immersive diving in the heart of the local marine life. But beware: the Algarve can experience strong waves and currents, so it’s important to snorkel only when the sea is calm. With a little vigilance, this activity offers an unforgettable experience, combining marine exploration and spectacular coastal scenery.

The weather in Portimão
Portimão can be very hot in summer. We recommend that you visit us in spring or autumn. You can even look forward towinter, when temperatures remain mild. A more temperate climate means you can enjoy outdoor activities and beautiful scenery without suffering from excessive heat. This flexibility in choosing when to visit is one of the advantages of the region. Outside the peak summer season, you’ll also benefit from more attractive prices for accommodation and tourist activities.
Crowds in Portimão
Portimão is a popular tourist destination not only in the high season, but also in the low season. We’ve noticed that iconic sites like the Grotte de Benagil can quickly become saturated with visitors, sometimes diminishing the charm of the experience. To avoid these inconveniences, opt for a stay in spring or autumn, when crowds are more moderate and the weather is more pleasant. To make the most of your stay, you’ll need to plan ahead. The city’s growing popularity requires a certain amount of organization, especially for water sports and excursions. A word of advice: book your boat trip to Grotte de Benagil now!
Steep and dangerous cliffs
The cliffs lining Portimão’s beaches can be particularly dangerous, as the rock is friable. There’s always a risk of falling, so be sure to follow the marked paths on your coastal walks. You’ll notice warning signs in several places – take them seriously and keep a safe distance from the cliff edge. The spectacular beauty of the area should not blind us to the need for caution if we are to enjoy these unique landscapes to the full and in complete safety!
Adapt your itinerary when it rains
When the weather doesn’t allow you to take full advantage of outdoor activities, Portimão offers several interesting cultural alternatives. The Portimão Museum and the Museum of Illusion are great places to discover local history and have fun with the family. We also recommend a visit to Notre-Dame de la Conception Church and the Jesuit College Convent, which bear witness to the region’s religious heritage. Hotel facilities, especially spa areas, become the perfect refuge for keeping your stay relaxed. The Municipal Market and handicraft stores will allow you to continue your cultural discoveries in a sheltered spot, while unearthing authentic souvenirs of your visit to the Algarve.
