Is the Praia dos Careanos worth it?
Yes, it’s definitely worth the detour. It is one of Portimão’s most beautiful beaches. The Praia dos Careanos seduced us with its spectacular ochre cliffs that create a striking contrast with the blue of the ocean. Practical facilities include a beach bar and deckchair and parasol hire.
Type of beach
Sand or no sand?
The beach floor is made up of fine golden sand. We noticed the presence of shell fragments dotting the beach. You’ll also see posidonia meadows in the water, evidence of a preserved marine ecosystem.
Swimming conditions and supervision
The beach is supervised in season. We recommend that you keep your wits about you, as the slope into the water is steep and you soon lose your footing. Waves can be strong, and you’ll notice signs on site indicating that tsunamis are a possibility. This configuration calls for a certain amount of caution when swimming. There’s also a sand dyke to prevent the waves from reaching the deckchair and parasol rental area.
Installations
Toilets are available at the beach bar. We didn’t see a shower on our visit. Sun loungers and parasols are available for hire for those wishing to enjoy seaside comfort.

Access by car and parking
To reach Praia dos Careanos by car, take the Estrada do Vau. Pay parking lots are located at the top of the cliffs. We advise you to arrive early, as these parking lots quickly become overcrowded in high season.

- Don’t take a car that’s too wide, as old towns have narrow streets and small parking spaces.

Access from the parking lot
From the parking lot at the top of the cliffs, descend a steep concrete staircase to the sand. We have found that this descent requires a certain amount of vigilance, especially in wet weather.
Public transport access
You can reach the beach by bus, with the “Hotel Presidente” stop nearby. Find out about schedules and itineraries here.

Dog
Dogs are not allowed on the beach.
Reduced mobility access
The beach is not accessible to people with reduced mobility. The steep concrete staircase to the sand from the top of the cliffs is a major obstacle. We recommend that you turn to Praia do Vau instead.
With children
The beach is not ideal for a visit with children. The waves can be intense and the slope to enter the water is steep, which we don’t think offers the best safety conditions for the youngest. We recommend the safer Praia do Vau for families with young children.
Naturism
It is not possible to practice naturism on this beach.
Other restrictions: rockfall, tsunami
Dangerous areas are signposted on site, particularly concerning the risk of falling rocks from the cliffs. Signs also indicate the risk of tsunamis. We recommend that you heed these warnings and remain aware of your surroundings.
Eating out
You’ll find a beach bar directly on site for refreshments and snacks. Restaurante O Viriato is also an 8-minute walk from the beach, offering an additional option for dining after your swim.
