Practical tips for a 7-day visit to Portimão
What can you see in Portimão in a week? Is it long enough?
A week in Portimão will allow you to discover the must-sees while enjoying the relaxed pace of the Algarve. We loved alternating between cultural exploration, seaside relaxation and gastronomic discoveries. You’ll have the chance to fully immerse yourself in the local atmosphere and discover the surrounding natural wonders, from the famous Benagil Cave to authentic villages like Ferragudo.
Maps of must-see attractions
To help you find your way around our itinerary below, here’s our map of Portimão’s main tourist attractions:

Getting around Portimão
Portimão city center and the Zona Ribeirinha are within easy walking distance. The alleyways are well laid out, with smooth passages to facilitate wheelchair access. To reach Praia da Rocha or the city’s other beaches, it’s best to travel by car, cab or local bus – more info on the public transport network here. That said, in our opinion, the car remains the best option for exploring the surrounding area at your own pace: Ferragudo, Alvor, Lagos… all these must-see sites are much more accessible on your own.

Our ideal itinerary: 7 days in Portimão
Day 1 – Diving in the heart of Portimão
Morning: Discover the city center and visit the Portimão Museum
Start your stay by immersing yourself in the soul of Portimão. The historic center charmed us with its cobbled streets and colorful facades that bear witness to the town’s rich maritime past. We recommend a detour to the Parc Fonte do Jardim 1 de Dezembro, the Jesuit College Convent and the Church of Our Lady of Conception to take in the local architectural heritage.
As you walk along the Zona Ribeirinha to reach the museum, you’ll watch the ballet of boats entering and leaving the port, a pleasant sight that punctuates the stroll. Housed in a former canning factory, the Portimão Museum offers an immersive insight into the city’s industrial and maritime history, and is an excellent gateway to the destination.

Lunch in a traditional restaurant
After your visit to the museum, we recommend you head for Praia da Rocha for some fresh air and lunch overlooking the ocean. Restaurant F, located on this iconic beach, offers contemporary local cuisine enhanced by a fine selection of local wines. We particularly appreciated the relaxed atmosphere of this place, where you can enjoy your first Portuguese meal with your feet almost in the sand, with the permanent spectacle of the waves caressing the golden cliffs as a backdrop.

Afternoon: Surfing and lounging in Praia da Rocha
The afternoon is devoted to discovering Praia da Rocha, Portimão’s liveliest district. This beach is one of the resort’ s most emblematic, with spectacular cliffs and golden sand stretching as far as the eye can see. We suggest climbing the Santa Catarina Fortress for an exceptional panoramic view of the ocean and harbor entrance. The beach is also a popular surfing spot for beginners, thanks to its accessible waves and safe setting.

Evening: Enjoy the services of your hotel and dine there.
For this first evening, we highly recommend staying in a hotel in Praia da Rocha, the liveliest part of the resort. We were won over by the Bela Vista Hotel & Spa, a historic palace with an exceptional location overlooking the beach and a timeless charm.
You’ll love the outdoor pool with its panoramic view of the sandy beach, and the L’Occitane spa for total relaxation. Consideredone of the finest hotels in the Algarve, this establishment is home to Restaurant Vista, a Michelin-starred restaurant where Chef João Oliveira’s inventive, refined cuisine showcases the flavours of the Algarve and sublimates local produce. – Check photos, photos and availability.

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN THE Algarve
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Don’t take a car that’s too wide, as old towns have narrow streets and small parking spaces.
- For more choice, book early.

Day 2 – Between mythical caves and golden cliffs
Morning: Boat trip to the impressive Benagil Cave
It’s impossible to come to Portimão without exploring the famous Benagil Cave, one of southern Portugal’s most photogenic natural gems. Caressed by the waves, two cliff entrances lead to a small inner beach crowned by a dome open to the sky. You’re sure to be amazed by this discovery, just as we were. We recommend you try a boat tour or a guided kayak trip if the sea is calm. Perhaps you’ll spot some dolphins along the way, a magical sight that makes for an unforgettable excursion. A unique experience not to be missed!

Light lunch in the city center
For lunch, we suggest Restaurant Mãe Terra, a “slow restaurant” run by a passionate couple. This establishment offers inventive, colorful and perfectly executed vegetarian cuisine that seduced us with its creativity and original flavors. You’ll discover a respectful approach to local and seasonal produce, perfectly suited after an active morning at sea. The warm, relaxed atmosphere makes it the perfect place to recharge your batteries before continuing your discovery of the region’s natural wonders.

Afternoon: Swimming and contemplation at Praia dos Três Castelos
Praia dos Três Castelos is one of our favorite Algarve beaches and the ideal place to combine a refreshing swim, relaxing on the fine sand and exploring small coves hidden between the rocks. You can alternate between contemplating the rock formations sculpted by the elements and diving into the crystal-clear waters. The beach also offers magnificent photographic perspectives, especially from the surrounding cliffs.

Evening: Dinner in a gourmet restaurant
To round off a day rich in emotions, we recommend Restaurant NUMA, one of Portimão’s finest restaurants. It’s a family business run by Chef Nuno Martins and his wife Manuela João. This establishment offers cuisine made from the finest Portuguese ingredients, with a modern approach that particularly impressed us. You’ll also discover a rich selection of local wines carefully chosen to accompany each dish. The restaurant offers an initial 10-course tasting menu at 90€, and a second 8-course menu at 75€, for an in-depth exploration of regional flavors.

Day 3 – Between charming villages and magnificent beaches
Morning: Head for Ferragudo and its flower-filled alleyways
To reach Ferragudo, you have two options: take the local bus network, with route 110 stopping at Ferragudo (Largo do Regato) from downtown Portimão – don’t forget to check the timetable on the official website before you leave here – or drive there directly.
The morning will be devoted to discovering the historic center of Ferragudo, a charming village. We were seduced by the authentic atmosphere of this small fishing village that has preserved its traditional character. Narrow streets climbing to the top of the hill, white houses with flower-decked facades and a church overlooking the bay create a picturesque picture. This peaceful stroll allows you to discover the true soul of the Algarve, far from the hustle and bustle of tourism.

Lunch in the village
For lunch, we suggest you choose between Restaurant Benjamim Bistro or Restaurant O Barril, two establishments that perfectly embody the Portuguese art of living. These addresses offer authentic cuisine in a relaxed, friendly setting. You can enjoy your meal on the terrace while observing the tranquil pace of local life.

Afternoon: Hiking or lounging on the beach
For this afternoon, we offer two options to suit your mood. If you’re looking for relaxation, the Praia Grande, located not far from the center of Ferragudo, offers the ideal setting for idleness, with its calm waters and golden sands.
If you’re in a sporting mood, we recommend the cliff-top hike from Restaurant O Molhe to Praia dos Caneiros. This coastal path unveils exceptional panoramas of the Atlantic Ocean and the destination’s most beautiful beaches, offering unforgettable vistas for photography and nature lovers.

Evening: Relaxation session at the hotel and dinner
The adults-only Jupiter Marina Hotel – Couples & Spa is an ideal haven to round off the day. You’ll love the rooftop outdoor pool overlooking the marina. The hotel also boasts a complete spa area and a fitness center for those wishing to keep up their exercise routine. We recommend dining in the hotel’s restaurant, which serves Mediterranean cuisine in a romantic, soothing setting. – See prices, photos and availability.

Day 4 – Life-size ocean
Morning: Dolphins in their natural habitat
From Portimão, you can embark on a dolphin watching excursion. Sailing along the Algarve coastline while observing these marine mammals evolve freely in their environment is an unforgettable experience. We appreciated the guides’ professionalism and respect for the animals, with gentle, non-intrusive approaches that allowed us to observe these majestic creatures without disturbing them. Some excursions also combine a visit to the Benagil Cave, adding a spectacular touch to the outing! This activity will give you a unique perspective on the wild beauty of the Portuguese coast.

Lunch on the beach
For lunch, we offer two options to suit your preferences. First option: organize a picnic on the beach, buying local specialities at the Municipal Market beforehand – remember to take a bag to collect your garbage and respect the environment.
Second option: Restaurant O Rebelo in Praia do Vau, an establishment we appreciate for its philosophy based on simplicity and freshness. This restaurant focuses on presenting the catch of the day, making fish the undisputed star of the plate, complemented by a selection of authentic traditional desserts.

Afternoon: Relaxation and water sports on the beach
In the afternoon, you have several options for enjoying the Algarvian coast to the full. You can opt for a surfing session at Praia da Rocha, perfect for beginners, or choose a guided kayak trip to Benagil Cave for a more intimate approach to this natural gem.
If you prefer to relax, we recommend bathing and lounging at Praia dos Careanos or Praia do Vau, two beaches that seduced us with their natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. These moments of pure relaxation will allow you to fully savor the Portuguese art of living, facing the immensity of the Atlantic Ocean.

Evening: Dinner in an exceptional Michelin-starred restaurant
Restaurant Vista (1 star), located in theHotel Bela Vista and overlooking Praia da Rocha, is the gastronomic highlight of your stay. Before dinner, we enjoyed a house cocktail on the outdoor terrace to take in the superb sunset over the beach, a magical moment we’ll always remember fondly. The harmony between the quality of the food and the beauty of the setting make this restaurant a must for lovers of fine dining. You’ll discover exceptional cuisine that sublimates local produce in a setting of rare elegance, creating an unforgettable culinary experience.

We recommend a visit to the old town and marina, which offer an authentic glimpse of this charming little seaside resort. Narrow cobbled streets, white facades embellished with azulejos or colored earthenware, and lively little squares create a typical, friendly atmosphere. See our article on must-do activities in Lagos for inspiration!

Lunch in the old town of Lagos
For lunch, we suggest you choose between Restaurant O Mexilhão or Restaurant A Petisqueira, two establishments that perfectly embody the friendly spirit of this destination. Ranking among the best restaurants in Lagos, these addresses won us over with their ability to offer generous traditional cuisine in a typically Portuguese setting. You can sample local specialties while watching the daily ballet of locals and visitors in the bustling streets of the historic center.

Afternoon: Boat trip to the emblematic Ponta da Piedade
The afternoon will be devoted to exploring Ponta da Piedade from the Lagos marina, one of Portugal’s most spectacular natural sites. This boat trip offers a close-up view of the rock formations sculpted by the elements, creating arches, caves and spires of breathtaking beauty. We were amazed by the diversity of colors and shapes revealed by this unique coastal landscape. Enjoy local cuisine while contemplating the play of light on the cliffs and crystal-clear water. It’s the perfect way to round off a day of exploration, before heading back to your accommodation in Portimão for the return journey.

Day 6 – Immersion in the Algarve vineyards

This full-day tour takes you through the Algarve’s hinterland, between wine tastings and breathtaking scenery. You’ll start at the Villa Alvor estate before heading to Quinta Do Frances Winery for an in-depth tour of the cellars and winery facilities. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the local produce in a region best known for its beaches!
After enjoying a typical Portuguese lunch in a mountain restaurant, the escapade continues towards Monchique and Monte Foia, the highest point in the Algarve, with its spectacular panoramic views. With its winegrowing traditions, authentic grape varieties and unexpected discoveries, this excursion reveals an unknown and fascinating facet of the region.

The Restaurant O Quinto Império offers a fine immersion in traditional Algarve cuisine, perfect to round off a day dedicated to regional flavors. This establishment won us over with its authenticity and its ability to showcase local recipes in a convivial setting.

Day 7 – A beautiful end to your stay
Morning: Stocking up on souvenirs
This last morning will be an opportunity to buy souvenirs to prolong the trip! Tinned food, a Portimão speciality, is an authentic, gourmet souvenir. We recommend a visit to the Maria do Mar restaurant, where you can taste the preserves before you buy them, a unique cultural and culinary experience. And don’t forget to visit the Municipal Market to pick up some well-wrapped almond-based cakes, traditional delights of the region. You’ll also discover small craft stores where we’ve unearthed some magnificent pieces of colorful ceramic tableware, testimony to local know-how.

Last lunch in the city center
Restaurant Casa da Tocha is an ideal choice for your last lunch in Portimão. This friendly address won us over with its warm ambience and decor blending tradition with modern touches. The menu features regional cuisine with a wide variety of dishes: fish, seafood, meats, risottos and pasta, all accompanied by a wide selection of carefully chosen local wines.
Why not take home a bottle to prolong the flavours of your stay? This final culinary experience will allow you to bid farewell to this choice destination on a gourmet note.

Afternoon: Last swim on a golden beach
For this last afternoon, we suggest a walk with your feet in the water along the stretch of sand that connects Praia do Vau to Praia de Boião at low tide, a contemplative experience we remember fondly. Enjoy one last swim, snorkel along the rock formations, sunbathe or read in the generous Algarve sunshine.
In the late afternoon, retrace your steps back over the cliffs to enjoy a different perspective on the beaches, offering spectacular vantage points from which to immortalize those final moments. This walk will engrave in your memory the exceptional natural beauty of this unspoilt coastline.

Evening: Sunset at Praia da Rocha and dinner
Praia da Rocha is an excellent destination for enjoying the Algarve’s nightlife. This area is home to most of Portimão’s bars and nightclubs, offering a festive atmosphere until the early hours for those wishing to extend the evening. But above all, we recommend that you come and admire the stunning sunsets from this iconic beach. The sunsets from the top of the cliffs of Praia dos Careanos are also magnificent.
After this contemplative moment, it’s time to dine at Restaurant Adris, where you’ll be seduced by its generous, authentic seafood cuisine. Set out on a terrace in a lively street, you can enjoy specialties such as monkfish or clam cataplana, grilled lobster or hearty seafood platters.

Alcalar megalithic monuments
The Alcalar Megalithic Monuments will appeal to archaeology and ancient history enthusiasts young and old alike, provided you know how to project yourself, as the remains are not visually spectacular. To enrich your visit and better understand the daily life of prehistoric populations, the Portimão Museum offers a number of educational activities on site. Guided tours place the monuments in their historical context, while themed workshops – such as Life 5,000 Years Ago, The Sounds of Nature, Prehistoric Hunters and Monument Builders – invite the curious to explore different aspects of life in prehistory. It’s a great way to make your visit more lively and immersive!

Alternative 2: With more excursions in the region
Nestled in the heart of the Algarve, Portimão is an ideal base from which to explore the region’s wonders. Here are a few additional suggestions to tailor your itinerary to your desires:
Stroll through the village of Alvor and enjoy its superb beach
Halfway between Portimão and Lagos, Alvor is a small, characterful seaside resort that won us over. We loved its tranquil atmosphere, cobbled streets and unspoilt seafront. Its main beach, Praia de Alvor, is one of the longest in the region and is bordered by natural dunes. Accessible via wooden footbridges, it’s a really pleasant place to stroll. It’s the perfect place for walking, sunbathing or water sports. The Alvor Estuary is also very popular with kitesurfers!

Explore the coast and mountains of the Algarve
This half-day jeep tour combines the coast and mountains of the Algarve on an itinerary dotted with typical villages and unspoilt natural landscapes. From Ferragudo, an authentic fishing village, to Silves and its Moorish heritage, via the wild panoramas of Odelouca and the seaside ambience of Alvor, each stage reveals a different facet of the region. We particularly appreciated this off-the-beaten-track immersion, enriched by the comments of a passionate local guide. The tour ends at the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina, a testament to the Algarve’s military heritage and a superb vantage point.

Walking the Seven Hanging Valleys trail
This spectacular trail, which links Praia da Marinha – often cited as one of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches – to Praia do Vale de Centeanes, skirts the golden cliffs of the Algarve and offers some of the country’s most impressive coastal panoramas. Along the way, you’ll discover secret coves, natural arches and rock formations sculpted by the ocean.
There are two options: follow the itinerary on your own, or opt for an organized tour that includes a boat trip to the famous Benagil Cave. We highly recommend this second option, ideal for combining walking and maritime discovery in a full day full of wonder.

What you need to know for your week in Portimão
The weather in Portimão
Portimão can be very hot in summer. We recommend that you visit us in spring or autumn. You can even look forward towinter, when temperatures remain mild. A more temperate climate means you can enjoy outdoor activities and beautiful scenery without suffering from excessive heat. This flexibility in choosing when to visit is one of the advantages of the region. Outside the peak summer season, you’ll also benefit from more attractive prices for accommodation and tourist activities.

Crowds in Portimão
Portimão is a popular tourist destination not only in the high season, but also in the low season. We’ve noticed that iconic sites like the Grotte de Benagil can quickly become saturated with visitors, sometimes diminishing the charm of the experience. To avoid these inconveniences, opt for a stay in spring or autumn, when crowds are more moderate and the weather is more pleasant. To make the most of your stay, you’ll need to plan ahead. The city’s growing popularity requires a certain amount of organization, especially for water sports and excursions. A word of advice: book your boat trip to Grotte de Benagil now!

Steep and dangerous cliffs
The cliffs lining Portimão’s beaches can be particularly dangerous, as the rock is friable. There’s always a risk of falling, so be sure to follow the marked paths on your coastal walks. You’ll notice warning signs in several places – take them seriously and keep a safe distance from the cliff edge. The spectacular beauty of the area should not blind us to the need for caution if we are to enjoy these unique landscapes to the full and in complete safety!

Adapt your itinerary when it rains
When the weather doesn’t allow you to take full advantage of outdoor activities, Portimão offers several interesting cultural alternatives. The Portimão Museum and the Museum of Illusion are great places to discover local history and have fun with the family. We also recommend a visit to Notre-Dame de la Conception Church and the Jesuit College Convent, which bear witness to the region’s religious heritage. Hotel facilities, especially spa areas, become the perfect refuge for keeping your stay relaxed. The Municipal Market and handicraft stores will allow you to continue your cultural discoveries in a sheltered spot, while unearthing authentic souvenirs of your visit to the Algarve.
