Where to stay in Cascais: best districts

Why sleep in Cascais?

Cascais-Estoril is one of the most popular seaside getaways from Lisbon, accessible by train in just 30 minutes. The city’s appeal lies in its balance of Portuguese authenticity, lively life, cultural offerings, superb beaches and a varied range of hotels. It’s one of the most pleasant places to stay on the Portuguese coast!

Map of the best areas to stay in Cascais

Sleeping in downtown Cascais

Cascais - Sleeping in downtown Cascais

Cascais town center is home to the main attractions: marina, restaurants, museums, shops and sandy beaches. In our opinion, staying here means enjoying an ideal location on foot for exploring everything.

Benefits:

  • Immediate access to beaches, marina and restaurants
  • Nearby train station (direct link to Lisbon)
  • Numerous shops and evening entertainment

Disadvantages:

  • Busier and noisier in high season
  • Difficult parking in summer

Our favorite hotel: Hôtel Pergola

Sleeping at Santa Marta Point in Cascais

Cascais - Sleeping in the Santa Marta district of Cascais

This district is steeped in history. Dominated by the 16th-century citadel and bordered by the marina, the district revolves around Punta Santa Marta, where the iconic lighthouse and its characteristically colorful casa take pride of place. This is where Cascais reveals its most authentic face, with its maritime heritage and seaside promenades. One of our favorites.

Benefits:

  • Historic monuments: citadel, lighthouse, casa Santa Marta, Condes de Castro de Guimaraes Museum
  • Cascais Marina, shops and restaurants
  • Seaside walks within easy walking distance
  • Near Boca do Inferno viewpoint

Disadvantages:

  • A short walk to Cascais’ main beaches

Our favorite hotel: Hotel Pestana Cidadela Cascais – Pousada & Art District

Sleeping on the west coast of Cascais, Costa do Guia

Cascais - Sleep on the west coast of Cascais
Praia do Guincho

The west coast of Cascais, from Costa do Guia to Guincho, is a completely different story: wild, windy and spectacular. This area attracts surfers and lovers of wide open spaces, on the edge of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. We loved the almost deserted beaches and the natural beauty of this part of the Portuguese coast!

Benefits:

  • Exceptional natural setting, wild beaches
  • Peace and seclusion away from the hustle and bustle of tourism
  • Ideal for landscape, surf and hiking enthusiasts

Disadvantages:

  • Car required to reach Cascais or Estoril
  • Few shops and restaurants in the immediate vicinity

Our favorite hotel: Hotel Fortaleza do Guincho Relais & Châteaux

Sleeping in Estoril

Cascais - Sleep in Estoril

Estoril, Cascais’ neighboring municipality, lies to the east of the city. It is renowned for its casino and spa services. In our opinion, staying here combines modernity with proximity to the beaches.

Benefits:

  • Quiet, modern neighborhood with beach access
  • Direct rail connection to Cascais and Lisbon
  • Estoril casino and seaside walks within easy reach

Disadvantages:

  • Less lively than the center of Cascais
  • The road to Lisbon with heavy traffic crosses Estoril, which can be noisy and doesn’t offer the best views.

Our favorite hotel: Hotel Estoril Vintage

Other useful tips to keep in mind

In high season (July-August), it’s advisable to book several weeks in advance, especially for seaside hotels.

Parking can be difficult in the center of Cascais during the summer. If you park in the center of town in a public car park, bring some change to pay the ticket machines, not all of which accept credit cards. Don’t hesitate to come by train or cab from Lisbon. The prices are right.

OUR TIPS FOR RENTING A CAR IN Portugal
  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • Don’t take a car that’s too wide, as old towns have narrow streets and small parking spaces.
  • For more choice, book early.

1. Hotel Estoril Vintage (historic charm)

Hotel Estoril Vintage - Cascais

Located in Estoril, Hotel Estoril Vintage is a 5-star hotel with an atmosphere reminiscent of the golden age of the Portuguese Riviera. This is our favorite part of Cascais, and indeed of our stay in Portugal. What sets this establishment apart is its history. A former manor house converted into a hotel by the owner family, it has retained all its precious period furnishings. Inlaid Indian backgammon, 18th-century earthenware on the walls, original woodwork and fine works of art make up a decor of rare elegance. The establishment also offers all modern comforts and exceptional services: spa, outdoor pool, superb cocktail bar, glass-roofed restaurant. We recommend this five-star stay to travelers who want to enjoy Portuguese elegance and luxury.

Surrounded by a flower-filled garden, Hôtel Pergola Boutique Hotel is a Mediterranean-style manor house that seduced us from the moment we arrived. The villa’s architecture will also win you over, with its colorful windows and typical moldings. When it comes to services, the family-run establishment is known for its attention to detail. A hearty, typical breakfast includes Cascais cookies. It is served on the covered terrace or in the dining room with its fireplace. 5. Hotel Pestana Cidadela Cascais – Pousada & Art District (5 stars in the citadel)

Hotel Pestana Cidadela Cascais - Pousada & Art District - Cascais

Why stay there?

Set in the renovated complex of the 16th-century citadel in the heart of Cascais, Hotel Pestana Cidadela Cascais – Pousada & Art District is a unique address in Europe. This is the first hotel on the continent to have its own art gallery. We think the decor is particularly well done! As you enter, look out for the 608 swallows symbolizing the number of days dedicated to renovation. With its “Invasions d’art” concept, the hotel regularly invites renowned artists to decorate rooms and public areas. You’ll be amazed! On the dining side, the Maris Stella restaurant offers a view from the bay to the Santa Maria lighthouse for buffet breakfast; the more intimate Taberna da Praça serves a selection of Portuguese snacks. The hotel also boasts two bay-view restaurants, an indoor pool and an outdoor pool, both overlooking the marina. We particularly liked the cultural dimension of this establishment, which transforms the stay into a true artistic immersion. Why stay there?

Built on the site of a 17th-century fortress overlooking Guincho Beach, the Fortaleza do Guincho Relais & Châteaux Hotel is, in our opinion, the most unique address on the Cascais coast. The place is steeped in history: spiral staircases, terracotta tiles, brick ceilings and wrought-iron chandeliers in the central cloister give the place a medieval cachet. The rooms, decorated with high-end fabrics and dark wood furnishings, are just like the place – elegant and authentic. Some have private balconies with superb views of the Atlantic. You’ll also be won over by the gastronomic experience of the Michelin-starred restaurant, whose menu celebrates local Portuguese produce with exceptional tasting menus.
