The Municipal Museum of Archaeology

Why visit it? Our review

To better understand the city’s history, a visit to the municipal museum is a must. Housed in the former town hall, this small museum presents a collection of archaeological finds tracing the evolution of the region from prehistory to modern times. We were surprised by the richness of some of the exhibits, including Roman ceramics and Umayyad artefacts. The tour is educational, clear and quick to follow, making it ideal for the curious without being too long. You’ll be able to enrich your understanding of the city before setting off to discover its beaches and cliffs.

The Museum of Sacred Art

Why visit it? Our review

This small museum, housed in the former Chapel of San Sebastian, is often overlooked by visitors, yet we think it’s well worth a visit. It features a collection of religious objects, sculptures and paintings from the region’s churches. We loved the intimacy of the place and the quality of some of the pieces, such as the polychrome wooden statues and liturgical ornaments. The ensemble offers a different view of the local heritage and allows visitors to discover a more spiritual side of Albufeira. It also provides a better understanding of the works of sacred art on display in the region’s religious buildings.

  • Don’t take a car that’s too wide, as old towns have narrow streets and small parking spaces.

Albufeira’s surroundings also offer a wealth of cultural discoveries that we recommend. The Côrte-Real Gallery presents international contemporary art in an elegant space just 5km from the city center. Loulé Castle, 15km north of Albufeira, has been converted into a municipal museum, immersing you in the medieval history of the Algarve from the panoramic vantage point of its ramparts. The Roman ruins of Cerro da Vila in Vilamoura, 10km to the east, are one of the region’s major archaeological sites, with exceptionally well-preserved mosaics.

Loulé Castle
Now a municipal museum, it offers an interesting insight into the medieval history of the Algarve. This 13th-century fortress overlooks the town of Loulé and features exhibitions on the evolution of the region since Umayyad times. We were captivated by the archaeological remains uncovered during the castle excavations. The ramparts offer panoramic views of the town and surrounding countryside. The museum traces Loulé’s military and civil history through objects, models and detailed explanatory panels. Have you ever imagined life in a medieval fortress? The tour will take you through centuries of eventful Algarve history.

The Loulé Salt Cave
In Loulé, in addition to its lively historic center and famous market, there’s a unique geological curiosity: a salt cave. We loved discovering this rock salt mine, which has been in operation for several decades. We wandered through its galleries, stretching for miles underground, on a captivating guided tour! We recommend this unusual place, a sort of living salt museum, which offers an immersive experience in contrast to the sunny Algarve landscape.

Cerro da Vila Roman Ruins, Vilamoura
Just a few kilometers from Faro, the Cerro da Vila Roman Ruins in Vilamoura bear witness to the Roman presence in the Algarve. At this archaeological site, you can explore the remains of an ancient Roman villa, with its mosaics, thermal baths and pools. A small on-site museum also displays objects found during the excavations. The tour took us back in time and helped us imagine daily life in Roman times, in what was once an important economic and maritime center.
