Here are our tips for choosing the number of days you want to spend in the Algarve.

This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.
How many days to spend in the Algarve: quick answers
- Minimum to get an overview of the region: 4 days
- Number of days to see all the most famous places: 7 days
- Ideal number of days to really enjoy it, in our opinion: 10 days to two weeks
- Number of days for you: according to your criteria such as vacation time, budget, desires and interests.
- If you just want to spend some time at the beach… it depends on the number of days you have available and your budget.
There is no universal answer to this question. It depends on a number of criteria. We give you more details in the article to help you make your decision.

Number of days to see the highlights

Size and travel time
The Algarve stretches approximately 150 km from east to west.
You can choose to stay in a central location or change accommodation to explore different areas.
Roads are generally good, with a freeway (A22) crossing the region.

Budget
Estimate how much you can afford in total, so you know how many days you can stay.

Visa
If your passport is outside the Shengen area, the traditional tourist visa authorizes you to travel in the area for a maximum of 90 continuous days, including the Algarve, which is part of Portugal. Don’t forget to apply for an entry permit.
Personal circumstances
Take into account your own schedule, including work commitments and personal responsibilities. This will help you realistically assess how much time you can devote to the trip.
Weather, conditions, events
The Algarve enjoys a Mediterranean climate with over 300 days of sunshine a year.
The high season (July and August) is very hot and crowded.
Spring and autumn offer ideal conditions for exploring the region.

Frequently asked questions
Are 4 or 5 days enough in the Algarve?
4 or 5 days will give you a quick overview of the region, focusing on a specific area such as Lagos and its surroundings. It’s enough to see some spectacular beaches, take a boat trip and explore one or two historic towns.
Is 7 days enough or too long in the Algarve?
A week is a good length of time to explore the Algarve. You’ll have plenty of time to discover different parts of the coast, relax on the beaches, enjoy a variety of activities and explore historic towns in a leisurely pace. But you’ll still have to make choices, as you won’t be able to see everything, especially if you spend time on the beaches.
Is 10 days too long in the Algarve?
10 days isn’t too long at all. There’s a lot to see in the Algarve. You can combine relaxation and discovery, explore the coast, spend time in the hinterland, explore the villages, go out boating and much more.
