Are you on vacation in the Sintra region? Make your way to Praia Grande, the magnificent beach bordering the Atlantic Ocean. We were seduced by its unique blend of wilderness and modern amenities. A paradise that attracts surfers and sun worshippers alike.
In this article, you’ll find our photos and tips for making the most of your visit to Sintra’s Praia Grande.

This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.
Is Sintra’s Praia Grande worth it?
Yes, this beach is well worth a visit. We loved the large expanse of white sand, the sea as far as the eye could see and the convenience of the amenities. Here you’ll find ideal conditions for lounging or surfing, as well as a host of facilities, restaurants, cafés and stores. At the foot of the Hotel Arribas Sintra, a gigantic saltwater pool – the largest in Europe – welcomes those who prefer very calm waters. Last but not least, paleontology buffs will love it here: dinosaur footprints lurk among the rocks to the south of the beach.
This is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Sintra region!

Type of beach
Sand or no sand?
The beach is made of fine golden sand. We particularly appreciated its pleasant texture underfoot during our walks along the shore.

Swimming conditions and supervision
The beach has a gentle slope and shallow waters, making it ideal for swimming. Nevertheless, we advise you to be vigilant as powerful currents and waves can occur.
The beach is supervised by lifeguards during the summer season.

Installations
Praia Grande is well equipped. We found showers and public toilets available for visitors. Umbrellas and deckchairs can also be rented at various locations.
Surf schools and stores line the beach. Why not take a surfing course and enjoy the ocean to the full?

Useful information
Dog
Dogs are allowed on the beach. We saw several signs pointing the way.

Reduced mobility access
The beach is accessible to people with reduced mobility thanks to a ramp located near the Hotel Arribas Sintra. In addition, a pathway runs alongside the beach, making it easy to get around in a wheelchair.

With children
In our opinion, the beach is ideal for families, thanks to its many facilities and the choice of swimming (pool or sea). Children who are good swimmers will enjoy the gentle slope and shallow waters of the ocean, while remaining vigilant for currents and possible waves. The Hotel Arribas Sintra’s saltwater swimming pool, which is open to the public (although for a fee), is also suitable for younger guests, with its small bath. Finally, kids will love searching for dinosaur footprints on the south side of the beach!

Naturism
It is not possible to practice naturism on this beach.
Eating out
There are several catering options available. We recommend 2 addresses that we liked:
- Restaurant Bar do Fundo, located at the foot of the beach, renowned for its fresh seafood and views of the cliffs. We loved their grilled octopus and tuna steak.
- Hotel Arribas Sintra’s Terrace Restaurant, offering refined local cuisine with an exceptional view.

Hotels
Sintra has a great range of hotels! But if you want to be as close to the beach as possible, we recommend the Hotel Arribas Sintra, located at the northern end of the stretch of sand. Its swimming pool, one of the largest in Europe, and ocean views make it an ideal place to relax.
