Why is Lagos a top surfing destination in the Algarve?
While the Algarve is full of famous spots, Lagos stands out for its accessibility, the quality of its waves and the friendly atmosphere that reigns here: all reasons that make it a must for surf lovers!
A variety of beaches for all levels
One of the biggest advantages of surfing in Lagos is undoubtedly the diversity of its beaches. The coastline alternates between wide beaches, perfect for first glides, and more exposed coves, ideal for progressing in more challenging conditions. This variety allows you to adapt to weather conditions, swell and, above all, your level of practice. Our favorite surfing beach is none other than the Praia de Porto do Mósone of the most beautiful beaches in Lagos.

A surf-friendly atmosphere
Lagos attracts an international surfing community and offers something for every level. Here you’ll find surf schools open to all, surf camps offering packages including accommodation and daily lessons, and surf houses and hostels where you can share your passion in a friendly atmosphere. Downtown surf shops make it easy to rent or buy your equipment, while à la carte surf lessons can be tailored to your progress and schedule. We really enjoyed the relaxed yet sporty atmosphere typical of seaside resorts that focus on water sports.

When to book?
Lagos is a popular destination, especially in summer, when the beaches are quickly snapped up. To avoid the crowds while enjoying good waves, opt for spring or autumn: conditions are often excellent, prices lower and the atmosphere more relaxed. – see available options.

What to bring?
If you’re coming out of season, a full wetsuit will be essential to enjoy the cooler sessions, but most surf schools provide them. Just pack the essentials: a water bottle, a snack, a comfortable swimsuit, a microfiber towel, water-resistant mineral sunscreen, and possibly a waterproof pouch to keep your belongings safe on the beach.

When can I surf in Lagos?
Lagos boasts good surfing conditions all year round, but certain periods are more suitable depending on your level. Summer, with its gentle, regular waves, is ideal for beginners or those wishing to learn in a calmer sea. Intermediate and experienced surfers will prefer the off-seasons (spring and autumn), when the swell is more consistent and the beaches less crowded. In winter, the waves become more powerful: an excellent time for experienced riders in search of thrills.

Is the activity accessible to all?
Surfing in Lagos is accessible to a wide range of people, as long as you choose a package suited to your needs. Some surf schools offer courses specially designed for children, with light equipment, fun sessions and instructors trained to look after the youngest surfers. On the other hand, the activity remains physically demanding: it is therefore not recommended for pregnant women or people with reduced mobility.
