Located on the famous Costa D’Oiro in the Algarve, Lagos is a heavenly vacation destination. Its rich maritime heritage, its charming old town and its beaches, each more beautiful than the last, won us over completely. And don’t forget the Ponta de Piedade, with its steep cliffs that will take your breath away!
In this article, find out 9 reasons why Lagos is definitely worth a visit!

This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.
Is Lagos worth a visit?
Lagos is definitely worth a visit. We were charmed by its old town, with its small village feel, and its breathtaking beaches! Between boat tours, kayak excursions and swimming, you won’t have time to get bored. You’ll be seduced by the spectacular golden cliffs and turquoise waters of Ponta de Piedade. For more inspiration, our selection of the city’s best attractions will be available soon.

Reason 1 – For the charm of its old town
We loved discovering the old town of Lagos. With its charming squares and pastel buildings, it’s an inviting place to stroll and relax. Some of the houses, decorated with colorful mosaics, add to the charm of the historic center. Handicraft stores lurk around the cobbled streets, selling ceramics and local specialities. Bordered by the Ribeira de Bensafrim and adjacent to the marina, this area is perfect for a stroll. Go in search of the poetic sculptures scattered around the city!

Reason 2 – For its magnificent golden beaches
The beaches of Lagos are among the most beautiful in the Algarve, in our opinion. We fell under the spell of these stretches of golden sand bordered by impressive cliffs. Between swimming and lounging, you can enjoy water sports such as the Praia do Porto de Mós, an ideal surfing spot. Some beaches are no longer accessible on foot, but only by boat. From the steep cliffs, be sure to follow the marked wooden walkways, as there is a risk of falling. The rock is crumbling.

Reason 3 – For its boat trips to Ponta de Piedade
The Ponta de Piedade boat tour is the must-do activity in Lagos! We were amazed by the breathtaking view of the Costa D’Oiro from the sea. There’s something for everyone: kayak, speed boat or catamaran! Guided tours usually include plenty of time for photos and refreshing dips in the turquoise waters. Who knows, you might even catch a glimpse of dolphins?

Reason 4 – For its churches and museums
We were pleasantly surprised by Lagos’ cultural heritage. Saint Mary’s Church, the city’s emblematic religious building, majestically dominates the Plaza Infante Dom Henrique. We really enjoyed the Museum of Lagos, to which the Church of Saint Anthony is linked. You’ll also pass through the nave of the church during your visit to the museum, which houses exhibitions on regional history and art. The Science Museum, meanwhile, offers interactive science exhibits to captivate children. The small Musée de l’Esclavage, which can be visited using a digital tablet, is also well worth a visit.

Reason 5 – For its fish market
Lagos’ large covered market is a must-see, facing Ribeira Bensafrim. This imposing building charmed us both with its two-tone façade and its interiors, where walls and counters are adorned with brightly hued mosaics. Here you’ll discover the fresh fish stalls for which the area is famous. It’s also packed with local culinary specialities and local produce. Local artisans also exhibit their creations: traditional pottery with colorful designs and delicate ceramics that bear witness to Portuguese know-how. Seasonal fruits and vegetables complete this varied offering, adding their own touches of color to this lively tableau.

Reason 6 – For its quality hotels
Lagos boasts a high-quality range of hotels in the city center, Ponta da Piedade and Meia Praia areas. If you’re travelling by car, the hotels in Punta de Piedade or Meia Praia offer idyllic settings! In our opinion, it’s well worth staying several nights to fully enjoy the experience. We’ve selected our 3 favorite addresses by sector:
- Boutique Hotel Vivenda Miranda (Punta da Piedade) – Check photos, photos and availability.
- Palmares Signature apartments (Meia Praia) – Check photos, photos and availability.
- Lagos Atlantic Hotel (downtown) – Check photos, photos and availability.

Reason 7 – For Portuguese gastronomy
In addition to the many small shops where you can sample local specialties, Lagos’ restaurants also feature Portuguese gastronomy. We’ve selected our 3 favorite restaurants from among the city’s wealth of good addresses:
- Restaurant Al Sud: a Michelin-starred restaurant offering a true gastronomic experience
- Restaurant A Petisqueira: nestled in the heart of the old town, it stands out for its delicious fish dishes.
- Restaurant O Mexilhao: traditional Portuguese cuisine enhanced by an excellent wine list

Reason 8 – For its historic buildings
Lagos’ architectural heritage bears witness to its military history. The Porte de São Gonçalo, a vaulted passageway dating from the 14th century, runs through the old castle. The arch links the Rio Bensafrim promenade to the old town. We also visited the Ponta da Bandeira fortress, which once protected access to the port. You’ll discover a small chapel and a beautiful view of the ocean. Although closed to the public, the Bridge of the Old Fort of Pinhão can be admired from the sea, or from the Restaurant Mar, overlooking the Praia dos Estudantes. It seems to float in the air and connects 2 cliff faces!

Reason 9 – For its nightlife
We really enjoyed the atmosphere of Lagos after dark. An artist was playing on the Plaza Infante Dom Henrique opposite the church when we visited. The alleyways come alive and the stores stay open late into the season. You’ll find plenty of friendly bars and restaurants to extend your evenings. We recommend the rooftop of Restaurant Mar D’Estórias, a versatile and relaxed place to sip a cocktail on a terrace overlooking the rooftops of the old town!

Some disadvantages of a trip to Lagos
Steep and dangerous cliffs
The cliffs can be particularly dangerous, especially around Punta de Piedade, where the rock is crumbling. The risks of falling are real, and some beaches are even completely inaccessible on foot due to these geological conditions. You must use well-marked paths during your explorations, as accidents happen all too quickly. The spectacular beauty of the area should not blind us to the need for caution if we are to enjoy these unique landscapes to the full and in complete safety.

The tourist influx
Lagos is a popular tourist destination not only in the high season, but also in the low season. We noticed that Punta de Piedade, which is particularly well known, attracts a huge number of visitors. To make the most of your stay, you’ll need to plan ahead. The city’s growing popularity requires a certain amount of organization. A word of advice: book your boat trip to Ponta de Piedade now!

The weather
Lagos can be very hot in summer. We recommend that you visit us in spring or autumn. You can even look forward to winter, when temperatures remain mild. A more temperate climate means you can enjoy outdoor activities and beautiful scenery without suffering from excessive heat. This flexibility in choosing when to visit is one of the advantages of the region.
