Species to be seen in the Algarve
The coastal waters of the Algarve, especially around Lagos, are home to several species of dolphin throughout the year. However, the variety and frequency of sightings varies slightly from season to season. Here are the main species you may encounter:
- Bottlenose dolphin: the most frequently observed species. Sociable and curious, it often swims close to boats.
- Common dolphin: this is the one we came across on our excursion, usually moving in large groups.
- Striped dolphin: recognizable by its lateral stripes.

Although rarer, larger cetaceans such as fin whales, killer whales and Minke whales can occasionally be seen during migration periods off the Algarve.

Best time of day and starting point for excursions
Excursions are generally organized in the morning or early afternoon, departing from the Lagos marina. Early-morning outings generally offer calmer seas, which enhance the observation of marine animals.

To help you identify the tour best suited to your needs, find out more about the advantages of the different types of boat:
Advantages of a fast catamaran: our favorite

- The activity lasts about half a day. We had plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery of Ponta da Piedade.
- You can move around the boat quite freely.
- A stable catamaran, ideal for families and those sensitive to seasickness.
- Swimming and inflatable slide available.
- Toilets on board.
- Peaceful observation with educational commentary.
- Seating inside and out.
- Upper deck with superb views.
- Speed to cover a larger area in a shorter time.
During our trip to Lagos, we went in search of cetaceans aboard a fast catamaran. It was a memorable experience, as we came across a school of dolphins! We highly recommend this option, especially if you want to swim too.

- Excursion with a marine biologist for a more educational experience.
- Smaller committee: 18 people maximum.
- Speed to cover a larger area in a shorter time.
- The adrenalin and sensation of speed are more intense than on a catamaran. Ideal for thrill-seekers.

Tips for enjoying your dolphin-watching tour in Lagos
Book at the right time
We advise you to book your excursion in the first few days of your stay, but leave some margin for possible postponement in case of bad weather. Some companies offer a free second attempt if no observations are made during the first outing.

Respecting marine animals
When encountering cetaceans, there are a few rules you should follow to ensure the well-being of these marine animals:
- Do not feed them
- Keeping a reasonable distance
- Do not shout or make sudden movements
- Do not dispose of waste in water
- Do not attempt to swim without specific supervision
These precautions guarantee responsible and respectful observation of marine fauna.
Take warm clothing
Even under the Portuguese sun, the wind at sea can be cool. Bring a windbreaker or towel, especially if you plan to go swimming! We were glad to be able to put on a sweater after our swim in front of the Ponte do Antigo.

Wear sunscreen
Protect yourself from the sun before and during your trip. The wind can give a false impression of freshness, but UV rays are still very present. Complete your protection with sunglasses and a hat.

Put on your swimsuit before the tour
If you’ve opted for a swimming excursion, don’t forget to put on your bathing suit before you even get on the boat! Generally speaking, there’s little room to change directly on board. What’s more, you’ll be the first to jump into the water! You don’t want to waste a second before diving into this magnificent setting, do you?

Anticipating seasickness
If you’re prone to seasickness, here’s some advice:
- move to the stern of the boat,
- stay outside the cabin to enjoy the fresh air,
- a light meal before the boat trip,
- look to the horizon,
- sip water slowly,
- prefer fast boats to catamarans.
Immortalize the moment
Take your camera or smartphone with you. To avoid dropping your equipment in the water, there are cables that connect it to your wrist or neck. Marine animals move very quickly. We recommend that you photograph them several times, then add to your photo gallery only after the tour. And don’t forget to take pictures of the coastline. The Algarve is a magnificent region. Above all, make the most of the moment and don’t forget to enjoy this extraordinary experience!
