Reason 1 – To discover its age-old multicultural history
Faro’s history is reflected in its architecture, which bears witness to a rich multicultural past. We were fascinated by the Moorish and Roman remains dating back to the 13th century, in particular the Roman wall that still surrounds part of the town. You can also admire magnificent buildings such as theArco da Vila, the majestic gateway to the old town. We learned that most of the remarkable buildings we can see today date from the second half of the 18th century. They were rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1755.
We recommend that you take an interest in Faro’s rich cultural, historical and architectural heritage and visit its must-see monuments during your visit!

Reason 2 – To explore the Ria Formosa: the Algarve’s natural paradise
The Ria Formosa is a magnificent natural park made up of 6 islands housing a uniquely preserved ecosystem. We were absolutely charmed by the scenery offered by this unique location. Enjoy a timeless stroll along theIlha Deserta, a natural paradise whose endless sandy beaches are among the most beautiful in the Algarve. We also observed exceptional flora and fauna. The unspoilt nature and landscapes of this internationally renowned nature reserve make it a must for your stay in the Algarve!

Reason 3 – For its centuries-old cathedral and fascinating history
Faro Cathedral, first built in 1251, is an architectural gem that bears witness to the city’s rich history. We were impressed by its harmonious blend of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. A National Monument since 1910, the building offers a unique experience combining religious art and history. We particularly recommend climbing to the top of its bell tower for a panoramic view of the old town!

Reason 4 – For its museums rich in history and art
We enjoyed Faro’s rich range of museums! The town boasts a number of museums, including the Maritime Museum, the Algarve Regional Museum and the Paço Episcopal. By visiting them, you’ll immerse yourself in the history of the city and its region, the Algarve. For example, we really liked Faro’s Municipal Museum, housed in a former Renaissance convent built in the 16th century. Here you can admire a collection of Roman artifacts and Renaissance and Baroque paintings.

Reason 5 – For its large sandy beach
The Praia de Faro is the city’s most popular beach. Located just a few minutes’ drive from the town center, it is linked to the mainland by a pontoon. Indeed, we found that this stretch of sand separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Ria Formosa lagoon. We enjoyed relaxing here after a day exploring the city. Here you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas, and dine in the bars and restaurants lining the coastline. In fact, some of them are among our favorite Faro restaurants!

Reason 6 – Ideal location for exploring the Algarve
Faro’s geographical location makes it an excellent starting point for discovering the entire Algarve region. The international airport, just 3km from the city center, makes your arrival in the region’s capital a breeze. After visiting Faro, you can continue your journey to the Algarve’s major cities, such as Portimao, Albufeira or Lagos. We took advantage of this strategic position to begin our exploration of Portugal’s magnificent South Coast.

Reason 7 – For a taste of Portuguese gastronomy
In Faro, you can discover Portuguese gastronomy, and more specifically that of the Algarve. We discovered a delicious mix of flavors with traditional dishes such as Xarém com Conquilhas, Carne de Porco Alentejana, Arroz de Lingueirao and Raia de Alhada. And let’s not forget Pasteis de Nata and the famous bacalhau (cod). If you visit Faro in summer, we particularly recommend the Ria Formosa Gastronomic Festival. Held at the end of July and beginning of August, it offers seafood and regional specialities.

Reason 8 – For its friendly atmosphere and affordable prices
Faro offers excellent value for money in terms of accommodation, restaurants and activities. We were charmed by the warm, welcoming atmosphere that pervades the city. The inhabitants are open-minded and friendly, making exchanges spontaneous and pleasant. You can also enjoy a rich and varied cultural program, including Folkfaro and Festival F. This friendly atmosphere, combined with the cultural offerings and affordable prices, make Faro a destination we highly recommend!

Some disadvantages of a trip to Faro
Busy tourist season
During the summer months, particularly July and August, Faro is very busy with tourists, which can sometimes make visits less enjoyable. Tourist sites, restaurants and accommodation are often very busy. You can avoid these inconveniences by visiting the city out of season, in spring or autumn, when temperatures remain mild and crowds are smaller.

Beach a little way from downtown
Unlike some coastal destinations, Faro is not directly by the sea. The main beach, Praia de Faro, is on an island accessible by bus or car. We advise you to check the bus timetable here, or consider renting a car if you plan to make many trips to the beach and back.
The weather
At the height of summer, temperatures in Faro can become quite high, fluctuating between 23 and 28°C on average. This heat can make your stay less comfortable. If you’re visiting Faro in high summer, protect yourself from the sun and plan your activities accordingly, giving preference to early-morning or late-afternoon visits. If you’re afraid of the heat, why not visit Faro in winter?

How to get to Faro
You can reach Faro by train from other major cities in Portugal and Spain, including Lisbon (3h30) and Sevilla (3h). You can book your tickets on the Combios website here. To get to Faro station from the city center, we recommend walking or taking the bus.
Faro airport is served by major European cities, including Paris, London, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Dublin.
Faro is easily accessible by car, with major highways such as the A22, N125 and N2.
