Option 3: by car
Driving to Albufeira allows you to discover the Algarve at your own pace. The roads are modern and well-maintained. We didn’t encounter any particular driving difficulties on our trip to the region.
- From Lagos: approx. 45min via A22
- From Faro: approx. 35min via A22
- From Lisbon: approx. 2.5 hours on the A2, then the A22
A vehicle will also give you easier access to the remote beaches, inland villages and spectacular cliffs for which the region is famous. Remember to check whether your accommodation has parking, as some areas of the center may be pedestrianized or difficult to access in high season.

Albufeira’s city center is relatively accessible by car, but parking can be limited, especially in the old town and near the most popular beaches in high season. We recommend the Parking garage at 31, Aveninda 25 de Abril or the Marina underground parking lot as safe solutions close to tourist attractions. Alternatively, there’s free open-air parking along Rue Maria Teresa Semedo de Azevedo and a few spaces in the city streets.
Having a car is still very practical for access to outlying beaches such as Praia da Coelha or Praia da Galé, or for exploring the surrounding villages such as Paderne or Guia. It’s also an easy way to reach other Algarve gems less than an hour away.

Getting around Albufeira is relatively simple thanks to a number of practical options:
- Thehistoric center and its picturesque streets are best explored on foot. The atmosphere is lively, and although the city’s streets are often cobbled and sometimes have steps or slopes, some passages have been designed to facilitate access for people with reduced mobility.
- If you don’t have a car or want to stay in Albufeira itself, you’ll have easy access to the town’s main beaches: Praia dos Alemães, Praia dos Pescadores and Praia do Túnel (also known as Praia do Peneco).
- The GIRO bus network bus network is particularly useful for getting around locally once you’re here, with regular routes, convenient stops and affordable fares. It serves the city’s various districts, the beaches, the railway station and the historic center.
- To reach more remote beaches such as Praia da Galé or Praia dos Arrifes, we recommend you have a car or use the local bus routes, in particular the GIRO line, Albufeira’s urban transport network.
- Several free and paid parking lots are available around the beaches, near the marina and in the town center. In high season, we recommend arriving early for easy parking.
