1. Praia de Faro

Why do we love it?
Praia de Faro, also known as Praia da Ilha de Faro, lies on a sandy spit that separates the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve from the Atlantic Ocean. We really enjoyed this beautiful beach, which stretches for several kilometers and offers both calm and entertainment. In fact, because of its length, it’s not impossible to find a secluded place to put your towel. However, fans of lively, friendly beaches will find plenty to do here, thanks to the many facilities, bars and restaurants lining the lagoon. We found it to be a friendly place, ideal for lazing around and strolling with family and friends. Finally, if you’re curious, don’t hesitate to explore the trails that run alongside the Nature Reserve, a popular area for birdwatchers.

Praia da Barreta, located onIlha Deserta, is one of the most secluded and unspoilt beaches in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Accessible only by boat from Faro, it offers a wild setting where silence is disturbed only by the sound of the waves. We were struck by the purity of the place, where the white sand contrasts with the deep blue of the ocean. If you like your getaways far from the hustle and bustle, you’ll love the feeling of being alone in the world (perhaps a little less so in high season). In fact, visiting the Ria Formosa Natural Park is one of the must-do activities on any trip to the Algarve! You can explore the island on foot, taking the discovery trail through the dunes, or simply enjoy a swim in the crystal-clear waters. We returned to the beach after a short stroll through the narrow streets of the village, where the traditional flower-filled houses enchanted us. You’ll be greeted by a vast expanse of fine sand, bordered by clear, shallow water. During your visit, you won’t want to miss the lighthouse, which dominates the landscape. We learned that this landmark building, the island’s emblem, was built in 1851! Praia do Farol is ideal for families, thanks to its peaceful atmosphere and calm waters.
