Weather, temperatures and conditions
Winter in Albufeira is mild compared with most European destinations. Average temperatures fluctuate between 10 and 18°C, with sunny days on most days, especially in December and February. January is generally the wettest month, but rainfall remains moderate.
We think Albufeira’s winter climate lends itself perfectly to walks on the beach, excursions into the hinterland or visits to the small villages of the Algarve. The wind can sometimes blow hard at the seaside, so it’s best to pack a windproof jacket for your walks.

Christmas in Albufeira
During the festive season, Albufeira is decked out in bright decorations and offers a friendly, family atmosphere. A Christmas market is usually held, with stalls selling crafts, regional products and Portuguese sweets. We recommend a stroll at the end of the day, when the garlands glitter and the atmosphere warms up with children’s entertainment, traditional music and sometimes even a small street show.
It’s also an opportunity to try bolo-rei or filhós, Portuguese Christmas specialties. During the day, you can alternate between sightseeing and strolling along the beach, before returning to the festive atmosphere of the city center in the evening. Albufeira in winter is not a dead town: shopkeepers decorate their windows, the streets slowly come alive, and the atmosphere remains relaxed but cheerful.

New Year’s Eve in Albufeira
In Albufeira, New Year’s Eve on December 31st is a major event, especially around the Praia dos Pescadores, where the town’s biggest popular gathering takes place. You can enjoy an open-air concert, usually held on the main beach, followed by a fireworks display. The atmosphere is festive and friendly, with a mix of visitors and locals celebrating the New Year by the ocean.
Before midnight, you can enjoy dinner in one of the restaurants in the center or on the seafront. At midnight, you can immerse yourself in Portuguese traditions such as eating 12 grapes corresponding to the 12 months of the year, making a wish for each month. After the fireworks, the atmosphere continues in the bars and clubs, especially on the Strip if you want to dance the night away. The next day, there’s nothing like a stroll on the beach or breakfast on the terrace to get the new year off to a smooth start.
