Pena Palace as seen from the Ch\u00e2teau des Maures<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Sintra-Cascais\/Sintra\/Castle-of-Moors\/i-SfHDvTc\/1\/LtF7v7k48rWKxS9477ndcrjDKh2JXD83F7GHsS4cm\/L\/Sintra_Castle_of_the_Moors_Portugal-0092-L.jpg\" alt=\"Pena Palace as seen from the Ch&#xE2;teau des Maures\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the ramparts of the Ch\u00e2teau des Maures in <a href=\"https:\/\/portugallovers.com\/en\/best-things-to-do-sintra-visit\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"756\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sintra<\/a>, the view takes in one of Portugal&#8217;s most colorful monuments: the Pena Palace. Its yellow and red towers rise above the forest that covers the hills of Sintra.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We found this contrast between the 19th-century Romantic architecture and the surrounding vegetation particularly striking. Climbing up to the castle&#8217;s fortifications takes a bit of effort, but the view that unfolds afterward more than makes up for the walk.  <br\/>It&#8217;s one of <a href=\"https:\/\/portugallovers.com\/en\/best-things-to-do-portugal-visit\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9315\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Portugal&#8217;s must-see attractions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The Fortifications of \u00d3bidos<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Centro\/Obidos\/i-vWLCDQ9\/0\/MG3rnW8JZj8x5MmwVWVzc7qHCRBjjBTpwVTfNHg74\/L\/Obidos_-26-L.jpg\" alt=\"The Fortifications of &#xD3;bidos\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00d3bidos is one of Portugal&#8217;s most iconic fortified villages. Its medieval ramparts, still intact, encircle a maze of cobblestone alleys and white houses accented with blue and yellow. We enjoyed walking along the rampart walk, which offers a bird&#8217;s-eye view of the village rooftops and the surrounding countryside.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Ponta da Piedade<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Algarve\/Lagos\/Ponta-da-piedade\/i-gB5GskR\/1\/Lxp58Fg8gptqFhCFSg8Ljz5b4nHJ7WLx2Cb5TdGdW\/L\/ponta_da_piedade_Algarve_Portugal_IMG_6330-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ponta da Piedade\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the Algarve coast, <a href=\"https:\/\/portugallovers.com\/en\/ponta-da-piedade-lagos-algarve\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5502\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ponta da Piedade<\/a> is home to some of Portugal&#8217;s most spectacular rock formations. The limestone cliffs, sculpted by marine erosion, form arches, caves, and spires that plunge into a turquoise sea. We took the trail that runs along the top of the cliffs to enjoy several different views.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A boat or <a href=\"https:\/\/portugallovers.com\/en\/kayak-ponta-piedade-reviews-lagos\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2644\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">kayak<\/a> tour also lets you explore the caves from the water, which we recommend for a different perspective. Porto as seen from the Dom Lu\u00eds Bridge<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Porto\/Dom-Luis-Bridge\/i-qjHWDTp\/0\/KK7VmJwgdNZCKwHV7WhdwtGsFRqCdg5HRhzRj2kWR\/L\/From_Fom_Luis_Bridge_Porto_Portugal_IMG_2158-L.jpg\" alt=\"Porto as seen from the Dom Lu&#xED;s Bridge\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Dom Lu\u00eds I Bridge connects the two banks of the Douro River and offers one of Portugal&#8217;s most famous panoramic views. From its upper deck, the view takes in the colorful rooftops of Porto on one side and the port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia on the other. The contrast between the houses clinging to the hillside and the traditional boats moored along the docks gives this view its unique character. One of Portugal\u2019s most beautiful cities! Bom Jesus and the View from the Stairs<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Norte\/Bom-Jesus\/i-RxSJDM3\/1\/K4CvwkhcVcZX8bTzzbKRpd5vpkskNpsZ2jhd8q4Nt\/L\/Braga_Bom_Jesus_Porto_IMG_9753-L.jpg\" alt=\"Bom Jesus and the View from the Stairs\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary, near Braga, is famous for its Baroque zigzag staircase, which climbs more than 100 meters in elevation. Each landing is adorned with fountains and statues representing the senses and virtues. We took the funicular up and walked down the stairs! The view changes on every floor.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Pedra Bela Viewpoint: view of Peneda-Ger\u00eas<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Norte\/Penada-Geres\/Miradouro-da-Pedra-Bela\/i-LBrzLPn\/0\/Mk7SL3SNXphJ2KXRhgjqZzsBd9xk97jzGc4zDGHvT\/L\/Miradouro_da_Pedra_Bela_Portugal_IMG_2761-L.jpg\" alt=\"Peneda-Ger&#xEA;s Viewpoint\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peneda-Ger\u00eas National Park, in northern Portugal, is the country&#8217;s only national park. Its granite mountains, reservoirs, and villages form a wild landscape that is quite rare in Western Europe. Monsanto and the House Under a Rock<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Centro\/Monsanto\/i-2DKvZLH\/1\/Ltw5WpKFxkMJ5JttCDgX3ZmBLj42KN6DQKvPGrvvH\/L\/Village_Monsanto_Portugal_IMG_9989-L.jpg\" alt=\"Monsanto and the House Under a Rock\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/portugallovers.com\/en\/things-to-do-village-monsanto-visit\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8455\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Monsanto<\/a> is known as the &#8220;most Portuguese village in Portugal,&#8221; a title it was awarded in 1938. Even though he&#8217;s completely different from everyone else&#8230; Perched on a granite hill, it stands out for its houses built between, beneath, or against enormous boulders, blurring the line between human settlement and the natural landscape. A fun place to go for a walk!<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Fal\u00e9sia Beach<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Algarve\/Albufeira\/Praia-Da-Falesia\/i-ZS9FmpM\/1\/MgFnnk9P5tqkBMdVNPWcx3M7jHG7srDdmpSTW2KSC\/L\/Praia_da_Falesia_Beach_Portugal_IMG_5040-L.jpg\" alt=\"Fal&#xE9;sia Beach\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fal\u00e9sia Beach, in <a href=\"https:\/\/portugallovers.com\/en\/best-things-to-do-algarve-visit\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"234\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Algarve<\/a>, stretches for nearly 6 km at the foot of orange-colored clay cliffs. The contrast between the red rock, the green of the umbrella pines, and the blue of the sea makes it one of the most photographed beaches in the Algarve. We walked along the shore at low tide, when the sand widens and reveals small caves carved into the cliff. But what we liked best was the view from the top of the cliffs!<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Marv\u00e3o<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Alentejo\/Marvao\/Wall\/i-2HfdmZt\/0\/NDwdx9zVFgBH7bMzHf2VhJmQG8cb7STRN992PnSZR\/L\/Marvao_IMG_0034-L.jpg\" alt=\"Marv&#xE3;o\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marv\u00e3o is a fortified village perched at an altitude of more than 800 meters, on the border with Spain. Its medieval ramparts surround a cluster of white houses with tiled roofs that seem to perch on a rocky outcrop. We climbed up to the castle, whose walls offer a panoramic view of the Alentejo plain, the Serra de S\u00e3o Mamede, and\u2014on a clear day\u2014all the way to the Spanish mountains. Our Lady of Serra da Estrela<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Centro\/Serra-da-Estrela\/Senhora-da-Boa-Estrela\/i-ZQKb5hQ\/0\/MsnFdSRfQjmNmD8LScSzv92GZ6jpjs9D5xsP8D7KK\/L\/Senhora_Da_Boa_Estrela_Portugal_-9928-L.jpg\" alt=\"Our Lady of Serra da Estrela\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the summit of the Serra da Estrela\u2014the highest point in mainland Portugal at 1,993 meters\u2014stands a shrine dedicated to Our Lady. The site, accessible via a road that winds its way up through a landscape of granite and heathland, offers an unobstructed view of the entire mountain range. We enjoyed the unique atmosphere of this area, where the vegetation becomes sparser and the rocks take on a more rounded shape.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">11. Alcoba\u00e7a Monastery<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Centro\/Alcobaca-Monastery\/i-djghxkM\/1\/McJZ6kLCwFt7VcsGs68wssv79ggCqR9mF8LPMcK5L\/L\/Alcobaca_Monastery_Portugal-56-L.jpg\" alt=\"Alcoba&#xE7;a Monastery\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Alcoba\u00e7a Monastery, founded in the 12th century, is one of the largest religious buildings in Portugal. Its Baroque fa\u00e7ade conceals a remarkably simple Gothic interior, with a nave that is 106 meters long. Tr\u00eas Irm\u00e3os Beach<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Algarve\/Portimao\/Praia-dos-Tres-Irmaos\/i-gsQ5JJp\/1\/L646RbbNf8hFHdpLf6Rm2QnL4g45sx6XmDSdphWnT\/L\/Praia_dos_tres_irmaos_beach_algarve_Portugal_IMG_6054-L.jpg\" alt=\"Tr&#xEA;s Irm&#xE3;os Beach\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tres Irmaos Beach, in the Algarve, gets its name from three rock formations that rise up at the water&#8217;s edge. These limestone arches and spires, carved by the sea, create a landscape typical of the Algarve coast. We took advantage of the low tide to explore the small coves that form between the rocks, which are accessible only at certain times.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">13. Introduced by the Moors and later developed under Portuguese influence, they depict both historical scenes and repetitive geometric patterns. Lindoso Castle<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Norte\/Penada-Geres\/Lindoso-Castle\/i-VqsdqGS\/0\/MdcMvzdrZgSdhdbQ5zPGfsqKcZHF8g2H4LSwFRHB7\/L\/Portugal_IMG_2672-L.jpg\" alt=\"Lindoso Castle\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lindoso Castle, located in the Peneda-Ger\u00eas National Park, stands on a rocky promontory that once overlooked the border with Spain. Surrounding its walls stands a cluster of espigueiros\u2014those elevated stone granaries typical of the rural architecture of the Minho region. We found this contrast between the military architecture and these small farm buildings particularly interesting. From the ramparts, the view looks down over the rooftops of the old town, the Gothic cathedral, and the Arade River winding below. We absolutely loved this contrast!<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">32. Douro Valley<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Norte\/Douro-Valley\/Douro-Valley-1\/i-w7D2qqL\/0\/KsQncPm747q3zKWBWKBXnWgmS3w8B2mjT9K9vcrqC\/L\/Douro_Valley_Portugal_IMG_9858-L.jpg\" alt=\"Douro Valley\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Douro Valley, the birthplace of Port wine, stretches for several dozen kilometers amid steep hills and vineyard terraces. This landscape, shaped by centuries of winegrowing, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. We drove along the road that runs alongside the river, dotted with numerous viewpoints overlooking the terraced vineyards and traditional quintas.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">33. Loul\u00e9 Salt Caves<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Algarve\/Loul&#xE9;-\/SALT-cave\/i-xBGPzFH\/0\/Mk75R2fGdDWdFN6vK82xtqLP8tRNwLvhCtJhm6MJ4\/L\/loule&#x301;%20salt%20cave-L.jpg\" alt=\"Loul&#xE9; salt caves\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Near Loul\u00e9, in the Algarve hinterland, there are old gypsum quarries that have been transformed into a network of underground tunnels. This site, which is less well-known than the region&#8217;s coastal caves, features white mineral formations that resemble salt landscapes. For a slightly different landscape&#8230;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">34. View from Sesimbra Castle<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Sesimbra\/Castle-of-Sesimbra\/i-KHq9q4n\/0\/KPpQLrx2dcVmJFZzSf5b9FjffDbf9kzNrCbNpghFz\/L\/sesimbra-castle-fortress-view-L.jpg\" alt=\"Sesimbra Castle\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sesimbra Castle, originally built by the Moors and later rebuilt by the Portuguese in the 12th century, overlooks the town and its bay from a steep hill. From the ramparts, the view takes in the fishing port, the beach, and the Atlantic Ocean, which stretches all the way to the horizon. Ria Formosa<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Algarve\/Faro\/Ria-formosa-excursion\/i-QBPm2Mj\/1\/LDc6qzMDM5LthDfr3WDHhVpxQGJ94QGB9DM4xNBh9\/L\/faro-ria-formosa-boat-excursion-026-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ria Formosa\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/portugallovers.com\/en\/nature-reserve-ria-formosa-faro\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2522\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ria Formosa is <\/a>a coastal lagoon that stretches about 60 km along the eastern coast of the Algarve, between Faro and the Spanish border. This system of sandbars, channels, and islands protects a rich biodiversity, including many species of migratory birds. We explored the reserve by boat\u2014the only way to reach some of the islands.
