Preparing for different types of road<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Highways<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Portugal has an extensive network of highways connecting its major cities. These roads are in very good condition and allow for quick travel. Most of them are toll roads, a point we discuss in more detail below in the section on road signs.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Driving\/i-gVjXnz4\/0\/KcNSCvw75tJhbbTrS8tTbfxp3CF24S7sZJrcdLvR7\/L\/IMG_9739-L.jpg\" alt=\"Portugal - Highways\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mountain roads<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside of the highways, roads vary by region, but most have at least one lane in each direction. We encountered very few single-lane sections, and when we did, they were mainly used to reach a specific attraction over a short distance. On mountain roads, there\u2019s usually a guardrail whenever there\u2019s a steep drop-off on one side, which is quite reassuring on this kind of drive.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Centro\/Serra-da-Estrela\/Zezere-valley\/i-jvQgpBZ\/0\/LBTD9cSr52qf3RK5L4hK4T2NRrDfgzHfWLBkj3f2m\/L\/Zezere_Valley_Serra_de_Estrela_Portugal_IMG_3461-L.jpg\" alt=\"Portugal - Mountain Roads\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In towns and villages<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around Lisbon and Porto, traffic is heavy, just like in any big city. Both cities have good public transportation systems, so we recommend that you park your car before setting out to explore their neighborhoods. Understanding signs and tolls<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Speed limits<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Speed limits are indicated on circular signs with a red border and a number<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are expressed in kilometers per hour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The national speed limits are: 50 km\/h in residential areas, 90 km\/h on rural roads, and 120 km\/h on highways<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vehicles towing a trailer must not exceed 80 km\/h.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signs with a blue circle sometimes indicate a minimum speed limit on certain lanes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The limits and certain hazards are also marked directly on the road surface<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Driving\/i-VxqdVVp\/0\/K8w2HVBc8Pz4ChF8qR5Dsw4gk6d4JThNGvLrf5jkc\/L\/Portugal_IMG_0541-L.jpg\" alt=\"Portugal - Speed Limits\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Road signs<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Road signs are standard and written in the Latin alphabet; there\u2019s nothing specific you need to know. Directions are generally well marked, although they may sometimes be missing in the countryside, so a GPS is still useful. Points of interest are marked on brown signs. The only downside we noticed while there: the signs marking the entrance to a town or village are white and unobtrusive, so it&#8217;s easy to forget to slow down when you pass them.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Driving\/i-CnpnFC7\/0\/MzFGPXxBTP5KgDrZ67wGgzF2nnjfB7pkNswPsKw8B\/L\/Portugal_IMG_0546-L.jpg\" alt=\"Portugal - Road Signs\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tolls<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Portuguese highways are not free; they have tolls at various points along the way. Safety: understanding potential hazards<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is driving in Portugal dangerous?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No, overall, driving in Portugal is still easy. There are many new roads, most of which are well-maintained. It was especially in the Algarve that we felt the most tension, as that region has the highest concentration of tourist traffic in the country. It&#8217;s better to stop and admire the view than to look at it while driving.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rush-hour drivers<\/strong> \u2013 As is the case everywhere, some drivers speed or pass other vehicles recklessly.
