We walked along Rua Direita, the main street lined with whitewashed houses and craft shops, before climbing up onto the ramparts to take in the view of the village rooftops and the surrounding countryside.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Centro\/Obidos\/i-9977FDv\/0\/KGWrRZ9mVRTvCdxqBwPR9mGDf9V5WbJrLhLSQ5Xwx\/L\/Obidos_-3-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"View of &#xD3;bidos\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u00d3bidos Castle, now converted into a pousada, frames the view at the far end of the street. The village, which is entirely pedestrian-only within its ramparts, features rows of immaculate white houses lining cobblestone streets dotted with carved doorways, small art galleries, and craft shops.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Portugal\/Alentejo\/Monsaraz\/i-pC2DJqk\/1\/K48Wwh8K8STfPnNqXKgzKk9snchg29m9QD59HgvGQ\/L\/Monsaraz_Portugal_IMG_4235-L.jpg\" alt=\"View from Monsaraz Castle  \"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We climbed up to the castle, built in the 14th century during the reign of Dinis I, to admire one of the region\u2019s most beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding olive groves and vineyards. Compared to other villages in the Alentejo, we found Monsaraz to be particularly well-preserved, without losing its peaceful atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The
