Its historic center (Cidade Velha), surrounded by ramparts, is home to a remarkable architectural heritage that bears witness to the city’s eventful history. The cathedral, a blend of Gothic and Baroque styles, offers a panoramic view of the old town and the Ria Formosa from its bell tower.

We enjoyed the authentic atmosphere of its cobblestone streets, far from the tourist hustle and bustle of other cities in the Algarve.
The Ria Formosa Natural Park, with its labyrinth of lagoons, islands and salt marshes, is also a major asset for this city, which perfectly combines cultural heritage and natural riches.

Attractions

The Cidade Velha (Old Town) and its ramparts

The cathedral (Sé) and its panorama

The eerie Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones)

The Municipal Museum with Roman remains

Ria Formosa Natural Park

Boat excursions to the lagoon islands

See our selection of Faro’s top attractions.

Access

Central Algarve

The region’s main airport

It’s a good place to stay. See our selection of the best neighborhoods and hotels.

5. Its covered market, built in neo-Moorish style in the early 20th century, is the beating heart of the town and impressed us with its distinctive architecture.

Attractions

The covered market (Mercado Municipal)

The medieval castle and its ramparts

São Clemente Mother Church

The chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição

The Municipal Museum

Espírito Santo convent

The salt caves

Access

Central Algarve interior

Between Faro and Albufeira

From Faro: 20km (20 minutes by car)

From Albufeira: 30km (30-minute drive)

7. Monchique is also renowned for its healing thermal waters at Caldas de Monchique. The village has a traditional architecture with whitewashed houses. The old windmill overlooking the village offers spectacular views of the surrounding area.

But the area is best known for its beach (Praia de Odeceixe), located around 3km from the village.
