What you can see
A sober façade that hides treasures
During our visit to Sesimbra Castle, we discovered the Church of Saint Mary. The first thing you’ll see is the simple, elegant façade, typical of late Manueline architecture. Built in the 16th century, we took time to observe the details of its distinctive, finely-wrought portal and the bell tower on the left-hand side. The white walls, characteristic of the region, create a contrast with the stone elements adorning the windows and portal. The architecture reflects the skills of the craftsmen of the time, while blending harmoniously into the landscape.
The ocean at the entrance
As we pushed open the gate, we noticed the 2 white Tuscan stone pillars flanking the entrance. These alabaster columns caught our eye because they feature shell-shaped fonts, an allusion to Sesimbra’s maritime heritage. We appreciated this architectural detail. It testifies to the skill of the craftsmen who integrated symbolic elements into the building’s decoration. The reliefs on the pillars, enhanced by the play of light and shadow (especially when the sun’s rays shine through the portal as it opens), give you a foretaste of the artistic richness that awaits you inside!

You are now inside the church. In front of you, its single nave stretches across a small but open and luminous space. We liked the unobstructed view of the whole building, thanks to this configuration with no intermediate columns. Natural light enters through the portal and side windows to illuminate the azulejos on the walls and the canvas on the ceiling. We were seduced by the intimate setting and atmosphere of this spiritual place, which invites contemplation and contemplation. There are also small side chapels along the walls.
The high choir
As soon as we set foot in the church, we didn’t know where to look because everything seemed so beautiful! We immediately turned and looked over our heads. The choir of the Church of Sainte-Marie impressed us with its height of 3.40m. Take time to admire the curved, overhanging wooden balustrade and the paintings depicting the city’s emblem. Supported by the 2 Tuscan columns at the entrance, the choir is both elegant and functional.
Azulejos dedicated to the Virgin Mary
The most striking feature of the church is its walls decorated with 18th-century blue and white azulejos. Did you know that these tiles are typical of Portuguese art? Here, they illustrate episodes in the Marian cult. Each panel combines drawing and painting on ceramic, retracing a moment in history. Indeed, these azulejos also serve as teaching aids, as they depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. We marveled at this palette of blues on a white background. In our opinion, the azulejos help to create a serene atmosphere in this place of worship, bringing the ocean and the sky closer together.
The gilded wood carvings on the altarpieces of the 7 altars
The church houses seven altarpieces in gilded carved wood, typical of Portuguese Baroque art. Floral motifs, angelic figures and religious symbols intermingle. If you look closely, you’ll see that the gilding applied to the sculptures captures and reflects light. These works testify to the skill of Portuguese craftsmen of the period and the importance attached to ornamentation in sacred art.
The maritime imprint, the soul of the place
How can you not feel the influence of the ocean as you push open the doors of this charming church? We really liked the shell motifs subtly integrated into the sculptures, such as the fixed fonts at the entrance, the azulejo panels and the interior arcatures on the sides of the nave. And don’t you think the ceiling is reminiscent of the inside of a scallop shell? Sesimbra’s coastal heritage really permeates the scenery. We felt the ambient humidity and light sea breeze, as if the salty ocean air were permeating the walls, adding depth to the soul of the place. We found the visit truly soothing and charming.
