Visiting Sintra in winter: is it worth it?

Our review

Yes, visiting Sintra in winter is really worth it! We particularly appreciated the tranquility of the area and the opportunity to explore the palaces without the summer crowds. Even in winter, the gardens retain their charm, with lush vegetation typical of the local microclimate. What’s more, the city’s mysterious atmosphere is even more striking under the winter mist.

Weather, temperatures and conditions

Winter in Sintra is relatively mild thanks to its special microclimate. Temperatures generally fluctuate between 8°C and 15°C. However, the city experiences more precipitation between November and February. We advise you to bring warm, waterproof clothing, especially for early-morning visits. Humidity can be high, especially in gardens and forest paths around palaces.

Christmas in Sintra

During the Christmas season, Sintra is decked out in magical decorations. The historic town lights up with special events. We particularly appreciate the warm atmosphere in the cobbled streets of the historic center. Some palaces, such as the National Palace in Sintra, are decorated for the occasion.

New Year’s Eve in Sintra

New Year’s Eve in Sintra is relatively quiet compared to Lisbon, making it a perfect choice for those seeking a more intimate atmosphere. Restaurants in the historic center offer special menus for New Year’s Eve. We advise you to book in advance, as good restaurants are very popular for this occasion.
